Overview

Karna is a Lancer-class Servant appearing across the Fate series, including Fate/Apocrypha and Fate/EXTRA CCC. Based on the hero of the same name from the ancient Indian epic Mahabharata, he is widely celebrated as the Hero of Charity. Within the franchise, he stands alongside divine and supreme Heroic Spirits such as Gilgamesh and Gawain as a warrior of immense martial prowess and legendary stature.

Appearance

Karna is a young man with pale skin, white hair, and sharp blue eyes. His hands and feet are covered in black fabric, and he wears glowing golden armor and earrings directly integrated with his body. In his standard appearance, he sports a red cape, though in Fate/EXTRA CCC, this is replaced by a fluffy fur collar accompanied by metallic scales. During certain attacks, he displays heterochromia with one red eye, and he typically carries a large spear enveloped in fire.

Personality

Karna is extraordinarily magnanimous and stoic, quietly accepting all misfortunes without harboring malice or hatred toward others. Driven by an unshakable sense of honor, he refuses no request for charity and repays every kindness. However, his absolute honesty combined with a concise manner of speaking frequently leads to misunderstandings, causing his well-meaning observations to be misinterpreted as insensitive or mocking.

Abilities

Karna fights primarily with a spear empowered by intense fire. He possesses the defensive Noble Phantasm Kavacha and Kundala, a golden armor that reduces all damage to one-tenth and grants powerful self-healing. By forfeiting this armor, he can wield Vasavi Shakti, a divine spear capable of obliterating any conceptual existence. His arsenal also features Brahmastra, an homing ranged attack, eye-beam techniques, and Brahmastra Kundala, which fuses his flame attribute to create a devastating blast.

Background

Born to the sun god Surya and the human princess Kunti, Karna was abandoned at birth and raised by a charioteer. Despite his divine lineage, his humble upbringing led to constant prejudice. Recognized only by Duryodhana, he pledged his loyalty to the Kaurava clan and found himself in tragic conflict against the Pandava brothers—including his half-brother and rival, Arjuna. Bound by various curses and stripped of his armor by Indra, he nonetheless fought with total devotion to his honor.

Relationships

Arjuna is Karna's lifelong rival and half-brother, the one opponent capable of igniting a passionate battle spirit within the otherwise calm warrior. He maintains deep gratitude toward Duryodhana, the friend who acknowledged his worth in life. In Fate/EXTRA CCC, he serves Jinako Carigiri as her Servant, forming a unique bond where he steadfastly protects her despite his socially awkward tendencies.

Trivia

Karna's character visual design was created by pako, with main art by Konoe Ototsugu in Fate/Apocrypha and Wada Arco in the Fate/Extra series. Because of his ability to fire beams from his eyes, his Master Jinako Carigiri informally refers to his class as Launcher in Fate/EXTRA CCC. Additionally, official lore indicates that his mythic background grants him high aptitude for both the Archer and Rider classes.
