Overview

Berserker is a Servant appearing in Fate/Zero and related titles of the Fate franchise. Summoned into the Fourth Holy Grail War under the Berserker class, he manifests as a mysterious knight clad in battle-scarred black armor who displays a relentless obsession with Saber. His true identity is Lancelot, the legendary Knight of the Lake from the Knights of the Round Table.

Appearance

He is clad in scarred dark-bluish and pitch-black full plate armor, wearing a plumed helmet that completely hides his face. Beneath the armor, he is a man with long, wavy dark purple hair and a gaunt countenance. Due to his Noble Phantasm, his visual silhouette normally appears blurred and enveloped in a dense black mist. In certain spin-off appearances, he wears a business suit, while in specific games he is depicted holding his sword, Arondight.

Personality

Under the influence of Mad Enhancement, he has lost his sanity and capacity for normal speech, communicating primarily through beastly roars. Tormented by guilt for his past betrayal of the king—and even more so because the king forgave him rather than punishing him—he accepted summoning in a state of madness to seek judgment from his former ruler. When his mind is clear in spin-off works, his natural demeanor is stern, pragmatic, and remarkably sharp-tongued, freely uttering harsh criticisms of his Master, Matou Kariya.

Abilities

His Mad Enhancement grants physical stat boosts at the expense of complex thought, while his Magic Resistance provides minor damage reduction, and Protection of the Fairies grants good fortune in battle crises. Eternal Arms Mastery allows him to fight with supreme martial skill despite his madness. His Noble Phantasm For Someone's Glory obscures his status and identity beneath a dark mist, while Knight of Owner enables him to transform anything he grabs—such as iron poles, modern firearms, or fighter jets—into D-rank pseudo-Noble Phantasms. His true Noble Phantasm, Arondight, is an indestructible sword that seals his other Noble Phantasms upon release, boosting all parameters and dealing bonus damage against dragon attributes, though it consumes enormous amounts of mana.

Background

Raised by a lake fairy after losing his parents in childhood, he later joined the Knights of the Round Table and was celebrated for his peerless valor. However, his secret affair with Queen Guinevere led to the disintegration of the Round Table and the fall of Britain. Left unpunished by King Arthur's noble forgiveness, he lived in tormenting guilt that persisted after death. Summoned as a Berserker by Matou Kariya during the Fourth Holy Grail War—a class chosen both to cover Kariya's weak magical abilities and to satisfy Matou Zouken's cruel whims—he threw himself into battle to seek judgment from King Arthur.

Relationships

Toward his Master, Matou Kariya, he shares a thematic parallel regarding yearning for a married woman, though in a sane state he views Kariya with severe contempt. Matou Zouken treated him as a tool to inflict extreme mana strain on Kariya. His connection to Artoria Pendragon (Saber) is marked by deeply conflicted loyalty, sorrow, and an overwhelming desire to be punished by her. Sir Gawain recognized his serious and rational disposition, and even while maddened, Lancelot shows faint signs of sensing his son, Galahad.

Trivia

The conceptual design behind his Noble Phantasms Knight of Owner and For Someone's Glory took inspiration from transforming heroes. His iconic battle scenes—such as hijacking an F-15J fighter jet and firing heavy rotary cannons via dark magical energy—remain among his most celebrated actions in the series.
