Overview

Setanta is a Saber-class Servant featured in Fate/Grand Order Arcade and Fate/Grand Order. Representing the youthful training era of the Celtic and Ulster mythological hero Cú Chulainn around sixteen years of age, he embodies the boundless potential of his boyhood. Although he possesses awareness and memories of his future growth, his physical form and mindset remain young, unrefined, and determined to forge his own heroic path.

Appearance

Setanta has blue, spiked hair styled with asymmetrical front bangs swept up and a single braid running down his nape, paired with red eyes featuring slit pupils. His clothing combines a skin-tight inner bodysuit with a shoulder cape, puffy pants, a hood, and jewelry including earrings. He has a compact, youthful build and is accompanied in battle by Clan II, a small white puppy colored like foreign ice cream. He wields a wooden club alongside a shortsword whose blade, guard, and hilt are formed as a single unit emitting a pale glow.

Personality

Setanta is a confident and energetic boy who fiercely insists on choosing his own path rather than passively accepting a foretold destiny. He dislikes strict discipline and constantly attempts to flee the Spartan training of his master, Scáthach. Unlike many Servants, he eagerly intervenes in the everyday troubles of modern humans. He interacts with his Master, Ritsuka Fujimaru, as a friendly companion and fellow student. Though flustered by Queen Medb's intense affection, he is strongly resolved to overcome the ultimate defeat his adult self suffered at her hands.

Abilities

Fighting in the Saber class, Setanta combines swordsmanship and cudgel arts using his shortsword Cruaidín alongside a wooden club, even hurling his club from above during Extra Attacks. His personal and class skills include Magic Resistance B to negate basic magecraft, Divinity B as the child of Lugh, Red Branch Knight B reflecting his warrior origin, Hound Slayer A granting special attack power against beasts, and Martial Arts of the Land of Shadows B+, which substitutes for the possession of Gáe Bolg. His Anti-Unit Noble Phantasm, Cruaidín Setanta, causes his sword to emit brilliant light, striking foes with force comparable to Fergus's Caladbolg.

Background

Born as the son of the sun god Lugh in Celtic mythology, Setanta represents the legendary hero during his early training days before earning the title Cú Chulainn by defeating the guard dog of Culann. Although he historically traveled to the Land of Shadows only after becoming famous as Culann's hound, his manifestation as a Servant constructs a unique spiritual foundation that embodies all his training periods, granting him techniques and memories of the Land of Shadows despite his young age. He first debuted in Fate/Grand Order Arcade before appearing in Fate/Grand Order.

Relationships

Setanta holds deep respect for his adoptive father and sword instructor, Fergus mac Róich, while routinely running away from the ruthless lessons of his master, Scáthach, who even pesters him via rune communication during his Noble Phantasm. He views the adult versions of Cú Chulainn with mixed feelings, particularly rejecting Cú Chulainn Alter. While overwhelmed by Queen Medb's persistent advances, he remains eager to surpass his future demise. He treats Ritsuka Fujimaru as a frank partner and maintains a friendly rivalry toward Alexander.

Trivia

Setanta's visual design was created by the illustrator lack, cleverly combining design elements from adult forms of Cú Chulainn, such as his Prototype hairstyle, Lancer inner suit, and Caster garments. The design of his shortsword draws inspiration from authentic historical Irish weapons with integrated hilts and blades. His portrayed age of around sixteen aligns with the timeline details mentioned by Cú Chulainn in Fate/hollow ataraxia concerning his journey to the Land of Shadows.
