Overview
Ptolemy is a Servant in the Fate series, appearing in works such as The Adventures of Lord El-Melloi II and Fate/Grand Order under the Archer class. Possessing two distinct primes of his life—his youthful era as a general participating in Iskandar's conquests and his elderly era as the founding Pharaoh of the Ptolemaic Dynasty—he is a versatile heroic spirit capable of altering his appearance, stats, and Noble Phantasms during battle.
Appearance
Ptolemy exhibits two distinctly different physical forms depending on his age. In his youth, he has a height of 182 cm and a weight of 78 kg, wearing armor equipped with a right forearm gauntlet while armed with a spear, shield, or greatsword. In his elderly form, his body expands to a height of 210 cm and a weight of 142 kg, featuring long white hair, facial hair including a mustache and beard, and wrinkled skin. This older form wears a blue cape or cloak, wielding magical books or a large sword, and displays a subtle effect of flowers fluttering around his face when experiencing joy.
Personality
In his youth, Ptolemy is a cheerful, dependable, and tactically sound warrior who maintains a warm, cooperative relationship with his Master. In his older form, he emits a stern, authoritative pressure suited for a ruler, yet reveals a gentle, book-loving demeanor. In both forms, he uses the personal pronoun "A" and operates on the same core logic. Utilizing his innate Partitioned Thinking, he evaluates events and people from multiple simultaneous viewpoints. However, if he deems something to have permanently lost its value, he can act with ruthless coldness—unhesitatingly cutting ties or taking action regardless of past bonds. He harbors an intense disliking for harming women and destroying written works.
Abilities
Despite his Archer classification, Ptolemy does not use a bow. Through his skill Contact with Wisdom, he retrieves spirit origin data stored within his library to freely alternate between his young and old forms. In his youth, he engages in combat using spear techniques, greatsword slashes, gauntlet beams, and light pillars. In his elderly form, he uses books to cast laser barrages, spatial force blasts, and energy waves. His Noble Phantasm Pharos tes Alexandreias employs the mirror of the Great Lighthouse to convert his internal magical energy into a beam of extreme heat. Bibliotheke Basileiou manifests the Great Library merged with Atlas Academy technology, providing allies with accelerated calculation, automated laser defense, and shelter while accessing over one million light-recorded works. His ultimate Noble Phantasm, Soter, merges the library and lighthouse to convert all recorded knowledge into a blast of heat matching Beast-level intensity, though doing so destroys both Noble Phantasms and shatters his own Spirit Origin.
Background
Having studied alongside Iskandar at Mieza in his youth, Ptolemy served as a key general during the King of Conquerors' eastern campaign. Following Iskandar's death, he successfully navigated the Wars of the Diadochi by securing his lord's body and entombing it in Alexandria, ultimately founding the Ptolemaic Dynasty of Egypt. As its first Pharaoh, his prosperous rule earned him the title "Soter" (Savior). He directed the construction of the Museion, the Great Library of Alexandria, and the Pharos Lighthouse before passing away in his eighties after appointing his successor. In The Adventures of Lord El-Melloi II, his personality initially manifests via a mechanical bird before he is summoned as a Servant. In Fate/Grand Order, he aids the Master during singular events and acts as an underworld librarian in Ordeal Call IV.
Relationships
Iskandar is his lifelong lord and childhood friend, whom he treats with casual camaraderie in his youth and formal deference in his old age, while maintaining a complex fondness for his younger self, Alexander. He accepts the deep bitterness of his former comrade Hephaestion—who holds a grudge against him as a victor of the Diadochi wars—acknowledging her anger as entirely justified. He held Eumenes' military and political intellect in high regard as an opponent he least wished to fight, and frequently brawled with generals such as Perdiccas and Leonnatus over command rights. He maintained a strong bond with his son Ptolemy II, with whom he built the Great Library and to whom he passed the throne.
Trivia
The historical burning of the Great Library of Alexandria forms the conceptual basis for his third Noble Phantasm, which incinerates all stored knowledge into destructive thermal power. His narrative connection to the Atlas Institute originates from a setting nuance wherein his naturally endowed capacity for partitioned thinking allowed him to make contact and collaborate with the secretive organization during his reign.
