Overview

Tomoe Gozen is an Archer-class Servant featured in Fate/Grand Order. Based on the famous historical female warrior from medieval Japanese literature such as The Tale of the Heike, she initially appears as an antagonist under the title of Archer of Inferno in Sub-Singularity III: Shimousa. Devoted entirely to her late beloved, Kiso Yoshinaka, she serves her Master at Chaldea as a polite and dignified warrior maiden. In battle, she fights bravely with bow, sword, and fiery skills, while in peacetime she maintains a gentle and graceful presence.

Appearance

Tomoe Gozen is a female warrior with very long silver-grey or light blue hair and vivid red eyes. In her initial appearance, her hair is tied in a ponytail adorned with a white headband and a red ribbon, while wearing a short white kimono with an obi and split hakama pants that reveal her thighs. As her ascension progresses, she lets her hair down and equips heavy Japanese armor. Horns stemming from her oni ancestry manifest on her forehead, starting black and turning red in later forms, where her outfit shifts to a shoulder-baring sleeveless top paired with colorful kote and kusazuri armor.

Personality

Tomoe Gozen is a polite, dutiful, and gentle warrior maiden who serves her Master with utter sincerity. She possesses a somewhat detached perspective on her existence as a Servant, believing she is merely a temporary presence destined to fade quietly from the world. Despite her solemn demeanor in combat, she exhibits a whimsical modern side, having developed an intense passion for playing video games after being introduced to them by Osakabehime. During her time as an Eirei Kengo under the influence of dark curses, her true noble spirit occasionally surfaced, causing her confusion when sparing innocent bystanders.

Abilities

Despite holding a C-rank Strength stat, Tomoe possesses terrifying physical power due to her oni lineage, legendary for twisting off the heads of enemy warriors barehanded. She is proficient in various martial disciplines including swordsmanship, archery, spear technique, and horsemanship. Her skill set includes class skills such as Magic Resistance, Independent Action, and Mad Enhancement, alongside personal abilities like Demon of the Oni Kind, Knowledge of Melee Warfare, and Bloodline Excitement, which enhance her offensive capabilities, critical focus, and survivability. Her single-target Buster Noble Phantasm unleashes fiery arrows that inflict heavy damage along with persistent burn and burn-amplification effects.

Background

Tomoe Gozen is a historical figure immortalized in classical Japanese literature like The Tale of the Heike. Prior to the events in Shimousa, she was summoned by Gilgamesh during the Seventh Singularity in Uruk, where she fought bravely to defend the city and died defeating an enemy commander. In Sub-Singularity III: Shimousa, she was corrupted by Caster Limbo into the Eirei Kengo known as Archer of Inferno. Driven by the lingering sorrow of being unable to perish alongside her lord Kiso Yoshinaka, she wielded flames of hatred to consume the land. After her defeat, she joined Chaldea as her true self, serving faithfully.

Relationships

Her heart remains devoted to her beloved lord Kiso Yoshinaka, whose memory continues to guide her loyalty and affection. Conversely, she harbors strong animosity toward Minamoto no Yoritomo, Minamoto no Yoshitsune, and Minamoto no Noriyori due to past historical rivalries. Minamoto no Raikou serves as her natural counter in battle owing to trait advantages. In Chaldea, she developed a close bond with Osakabehime, who introduced her to video games, while maintaining a deeply respectful and dutiful relationship with her Master.

Trivia

The title Inferno stems from the common noun for hell as well as the title of the first part of Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy. Her character design by Shirabi features significant visual shifts across her ascension stages, ranging from a lightly dressed ponytail look to heavy samurai armor and a shoulder-exposing sleeveless outfit.
