Overview
A character featured in Lostbelt No. 6, "Fairy Realm of the Round Table: Avalon le Fay," of Fate/Grand Order. Originating as the Celtic deity of beasts and the underworld, he is a pivotal figure in the history of the British Lostbelt. Originally dispatched as a messenger from Paradise, he met a tragic end through the betrayal of the fairies, who converted his corpse into the land itself. Sleeping within the Great Pit, he eventually awakens as the formidable Calamity of Curses.
Appearance
His physical manifestation resembles a massive mountain covered in thick, fluffy layers of white animal fur. Headed by prominent deer antlers, his visible upper body alone measures well over two kilometers in height. His corrupted and rotting flesh continuously extends countless black arms to strike targets. During battle, the corners of his mouth are drawn upward, creating the appearance of a smiling facial expression.
Personality
Originally a benevolent and gentle deity who arrived to guide and admonish the fairies, his disposition turned into pure malice following their gruesome betrayal. Having spent millennia absorbing hatred and resentment, he transformed into an embodiment of pure destruction. Upon awakening, he acts as an unyielding force of horror, driven entirely by accumulated curses rather than reasoned communication.
Abilities
Classified under the Berserker class, he emits unmatched cursed energy. His thick, rotting flesh regenerates rapidly to shield his divine core, equivalent to hundreds of kilometers of planetary strata. He attacks using countless black arms capable of obliterating a city in a single blow. In combat, he absorbs enemy magic energy, inflicts seals on skills and Noble Phantasms, and spreads persistent curse contamination that deals damage while healing himself. Additionally, he is immune to crowd control status effects and increases his attack power in proportion to the debuffs placed upon him.
Background
In B.C. 12000, he descended as a messenger from Paradise alongside a human priestess to reprimand the fairies of Britain for neglecting their duty to forge the holy sword during the calamity of Sefar. However, the fairies poisoned and slaughtered him, utilizing his vast corpse to form the initial landmass of the British Lostbelt. His remains rested deep within the Great Pit for over ten thousand years, endlessly accumulating malice. Though guarded and suppressed by High Queen Morgan's defenses, the turmoil following her downfall allowed him to reawaken as a world-threatening calamity.
Relationships
He traveled to Britain alongside a human priestess, who suffered a grim fate at the hands of the fairies. The fairies of Britain betrayed and poisoned him, building their society upon his remains and becoming the target of his eternal vengeance. High Queen Morgan constructed the city of Camelot around the Great Pit and deployed twelve Rhongomyniad weapons specifically to contain his lingering power. During the climax of the Lostbelt, the Chaldea party and Artoria Caster fought against him in a desperate attempt to destroy his divine core and prevent global destruction.
Trivia
His name is derived from Cernunnos, the antlered deity of hunting, nature, and the underworld in Celtic mythology. During his boss battle in Fate/Grand Order, the dynamic 3D camera angles anchored to the Storm Border created a famous visual illusion among players, making the giant deity appear as though he were floating and spinning around the ship. His battle is widely recognized by players for being one of the most challenging boss encounters in the entire game.
