Overview
Astolfo is a Servant appearing across TYPE-MOON's Fate series, including Fate/Apocrypha and Fate/Grand Order. The son of King Otto of England and one of the Twelve Paladins of Charlemagne, he is typically summoned under the Rider class. Though considered a second-tier warrior in terms of raw physical strength, he compensates with extraordinary luck and a rich array of borrowed Noble Phantasms. Bright, cheerful, and unconcerned with traditional gender boundaries, he acts entirely on conscience and instinct to aid those in need.
Appearance
Astolfo is a slender young man with long rose-pink hair styled in a braid tied with black ribbons, purple eyes, and a visible fang. Despite his male physique, he possesses an exceptionally cute, feminine appearance. His default Rider attire consists of knightly armor paired with a black cape and thigh-high socks. In certain battlefields, he also wears a crop-top sailor uniform or casual streetwear. He is known to scribble over the gender entry on his status screen.
Personality
Extremely cheerful, impulsive, and optimistic, Astolfo acts strictly according to his own moral compass rather than cold logic. He possesses immense emotional resilience, never viewing past defeats as setbacks and maintaining an upbeat demeanor through hardship. He shows little regard for gender, treating everyone with natural affection and warmth. Guided by a genuinely heroic nature, he will gladly risk his own position or safety to help anyone crying out for rescue.
Abilities
Astolfo excels in agility and luck, utilizing his Evaporation of Sanity skill to gain heightened intuition alongside a burst of Monstrous Strength. His arsenal includes several Noble Phantasms: La Black Luna, a horn emitting chaotic sonic shocks; Trap of Argalia, a golden lance that forcibly dematerializes a target's legs to cause fall-downs; Casaeur de Logestilla, a magical book granting rank A Magic Resistance that shatters enemy spells upon True Name release; and Hippogriff, a mythical mount capable of dimensional leaps to evade all attacks.
Background
In life, Astolfo embarked on eccentric adventures, riding to the moon and retrieving lost items while gathering legendary treasures that he readily gave away. When his comrade Roland lost his sanity, Astolfo cross-dressed as part of a effort to restore him. During the Holy Grail War of Fate/Apocrypha, he was summoned as the Rider of Black under Celenike Icecolle Yggdmillennia, yet chose to protect and liberate the runaway homunculus Sieg regardless of faction loyalties.
Relationships
Astolfo forms a powerful bond with the homunculus Sieg, risking everything to protect his life and freedom. He cooperates closely with Jeanne d'Arc in guiding Sieg. He shares a deep history with his fellow paladins Roland, Charlemagne, and Bradamante, maintaining casual banter with them. Conversely, he found the twisted, possessive affection of his original Master, Celenike Icecolle Yggdmillennia, deeply uncomfortable.
Trivia
Although his cross-dressing originated as an attempt to soothe Roland's madness, Astolfo continues the habit simply because he enjoys cute clothing. His characteristic mental absentmindedness directly reflects legends from the Matter of France, where his sanity was famously stored in a bottle on the moon.
