Overview
Gray is a central character appearing in Lord El-Melloi II Case Files and related works in the Fate franchise. Originating from a family of gravekeepers in a remote cemetery, she lives at the Clock Tower, the headquarters of the Mage's Association, serving as the live-in apprentice to Lord El-Melloi II. Though not a true mage herself, she possesses formidable combat capabilities and takes care of her master's daily needs and personal protection.
Appearance
Gray has short gray hair with strands falling between her eyes, alongside green eyes. She conceals her face beneath a deep hood with fur trim, paired with a cloak and long sleeves. Her facial features are identical to those of Artoria Pendragon. Official documentation places her height at 154 cm and her weight at 42 kg.
Personality
Gray is shy, introverted, and unaccustomed to modern society or crowded spaces due to her rural upbringing. Holding a modest view of her own intellect, she uses an unusually archaic first-person pronoun in her speech. Although terrified of ghosts and lingering spirits because of her high spiritual awareness, she fights bravely when necessary. She exhibits deep gratitude and devotion toward her master, Lord El-Melloi II, while showing a firmer side when interacting with her sharp-tongued companion, Add.
Abilities
Trained in the necromantic arts of the Blackmore gravekeepers, Gray excels in combat against spiritual entities. By engaging in self-hypnosis and channeling magic through her Mystic Code, Add, she enhances her physical limits, achieving speed and durability capable of reacting to modern gunfire or opposing Servants. Add can transform into various implements, including a scythe, hammer, shield, boomerang, and bow. She also possesses the power to unlock a holy lance inherited through her lineage.
Background
Gray was raised within a isolated line of gravekeepers who sought to recreate the legendary King Arthur, causing her facial features to alter into those of the ancient king—a change that left her disliking her own reflection. After meeting Lord El-Melloi II, who was seeking an expert in spiritual entities, she left her hometown to join him in London. As his apprentice at the Clock Tower, she attends classes while assisting him in resolving various mysterious incidents.
Relationships
She holds her mentor, Lord El-Melloi II, in the highest regard and dedicatedly manages his daily routine. Her Mystic Code, Add, serves as a longtime partner with whom she shares a unique bond. Over time, she develops a close friendship with Reines El-Melloi Archisorte and maintains ties with fellow apprentices like Flat Escardos and Sven Glast. Later on, she forms friendly relationships with Rin Tohsaka and Ergo. She also cherishes memories of her mother, Magdalena, and her former mentor, Bersac Blackmore.
Trivia
Her peculiar first-person pronoun in Japanese texts was selected to convey her distinct Welsh accent. When featured as an Assassin-class Servant in Fate/Grand Order, she stands out for lacking the typical Presence Concealment class skill. Furthermore, her official physical measurements match those of Artoria Pendragon.
