Makidera Kaede

Overview

Makidera Kaede is a supporting character in TYPE-MOON's Fate franchise, debuting in Fate/stay night. A student at Homurahara Academy and a dedicated sprinter on the track team, she acts as a central comedic figure among the student cast. She is one of the few close friends of Tohsaka Rin who sees past Rin's polite exterior. In addition to her role in main works like Fate/hollow ataraxia, she serves as a main character in the spin-off series Himuro no Tenchi Fate/school life.

Appearance

Kaede is characterized by her short black hair, black eyes, dark tanned skin, and very flat chest. She typically wears standard school uniforms or athletic tracksuits. However, while at home she dresses in fine traditional Japanese kimonos, transforming her usual energetic appearance into that of a refined Japanese beauty.

Personality

Kaede is energetic, simple-minded, and quick to act, often driving comedy with her loud antics. Despite her boisterous front, she enjoys quiet solitary time and acts deliberately around others out of a desire to keep things lively. She displays surprising tact by adopting a polished, ladylike demeanor in front of clients of her family business. She suffers from an extreme fear of horror films and supernatural phenomena, becoming easily terrified by ghost stories.

Kaede excels as a short-distance track runner and is trained in traditional Japanese dance. She possesses remarkably deep knowledge of history. Furthermore, she exhibits high proficiency in traditional domestic arts, including exquisite Japanese cooking skills, traditional Japanese tailoring, and a professional-level eye for appraising antique artwork. Conversely, she possesses no capability or knowledge in Western cooking or Western dressmaking.

Background

Kaede was born into the family of Eichouan, an established traditional drapery and antique shop. Her lineage traces back to historic pirates, leaving the family storehouse filled with diverse curiosities, valuable trading cards, and odd artifacts. Due to her ancestors' past deeds, the storehouse experiences uncanny supernatural phenomena. She attends Homurahara Academy, competing on the track team alongside her classmates while balancing her domestic duties and personal hobbies.

Relationships

Kaede shares a candid friendship with Tohsaka Rin, with whom she bonds over shopping for antiques and collecting wind chimes. She views her classmate Mitsuzuri Ayako as a natural rival and enemy. On the track team, she is constantly accompanied by Himuro Kane and Saegusa Yukika, though Saegusa Yukika's unintended spiritual sensitivity often terrifies her.

Trivia

Her family storehouse contains an anchor-shaped long spear bearing the name Chosokabe, though it holds no connection to Chosokabe Motochika. The storehouse also houses items purchased from the Tohsaka estate without knowledge of their magical significance. During the development of Fate/hollow ataraxia, staff members jokingly imposed a temporary restriction on her inclusion due to her overly wild comedic antics.
