Overview

Tezcatlipoca is a Servant appearing in the Fate series, including Fate/Grand Order. Representing the chief deity of Aztec mythology who governs war, night, and rule, he initially appears in the South American Lostbelt alongside Daybit Sem Void as a Ruler before serving as an Assassin-class Servant and taking over the mantle of Grand Assassin. He embodies the fundamental dualities and dynamic conflicts of existence, living by a strict warrior code and maintaining supreme authority over the cycle of life and battle.

Appearance

Tezcatlipoca manifests in a self-made human vessel featuring blonde hair, blue eyes, yellowish skin with black facial stripes, and an obsidian prosthetic right leg. His primary attire consists of a white shirt under an open black jacket, long pants, orange-tinted eyewear, jewelry including a medallion, and black nail polish. He is also depicted wearing formal suits or ceremonial garments.

Personality

Appearing as a modern, sharp-tongued figure, Tezcatlipoca is a ruthless yet deeply pragmatic war god who views struggle and survival of the fittest as the true order of existence. He values the resolve of warriors over personal gain and abides strictly by rules and etiquette. Despite his grim and pessimistic aura that brings misfortune to those around him, he is surprisingly conversational and honorable. He holds a great affection for modern firearms, though his notoriously poor marksmanship is a sensitive topic he disdains having pointed out.

Abilities

Tezcatlipoca wields the authority of cause-and-effect manipulation, enabling him to alter outcomes by swapping existing events. His skills include Magic Resistance, Territory Creation, Divinity, Wisdom of All Creation, Master of Warriors—which grants contractors superhuman vitality at the cost of requiring them to fall in battle—Charisma of Struggle, and Heart of the Mountain, which turns him into a giant jaguar and sets the field to night. In combat, he uses modern guns customized with attached axe blades, a war staff, key claws, and strikes from his prosthetic leg. His Noble Phantasm First Sun merges the underworld Mictlan with ancient solar authority to sweep foes, while Endlessly Resonating War empowers allies with jaguar spirits into untiring warriors.

Background

Tezcatlipoca originates from Aztec mythology as one of its supreme deities, revered as the Smoking Mirror and the embodiment of the Black Sun. To manifest as a Servant, he constructed his own physical human body to act as a vessel. After secretly appearing in the Indian Lostbelt, he formally allied with Daybit Sem Void in the South American Lostbelt. Following the vacancy left by the previous Grand Assassin, he assumed the title before joining Chaldea's roster. He also makes brief appearances across other Fate works, such as encountering wanderers in the underworld in Fate/strange Fake.

Relationships

Quetzalcoatl is Tezcatlipoca's timeless rival, holding inherently opposing values regarding humanity, sacrifice, and order. He served as the Servant of Daybit Sem Void in the South American Lostbelt and maintains a unique dynamic with Fujimaru Ritsuka, whom he struck down and subsequently revived as a test of resolve. He acts as a strict older brother figure to Tlaloc, offering sharp advice to guide her. Additionally, the former Grand Assassin, King Hassan, notably advised Tezcatlipoca to abandon his reliance on firearms due to his poor aim.

Trivia

His name in Nahuatl translates to "Smoking Mirror," and he holds titles such as Moyocoyani ("The All-Powerful") and Ilhuicahua Tlalticpaque ("Owner of Heaven and Earth"). While Aztec lore mentions four colored aspects of Tezcatlipoca, his primary manifestation in Fate represents the Black Tezcatlipoca. Fans fondly refer to him by nicknames like "Grand Kuso Aim" due to his terrible marksmanship with modern firearms. His visual design was created by illustrator Sho-u Tajima.
