Overview
Emiya Shirou is the central protagonist of Fate/stay night and its related media. He is a second-year high school student at Homurabara Academy in Fuyuki City and an apprentice magus. Having survived a catastrophic citywide fire ten years prior, he was rescued and adopted by Emiya Kiritsugu, which inspired him to relentlessly pursue the ideal of becoming a "hero of justice." Known for his helpful nature and inability to refuse anyone in need, Shirou is dragged into the Fifth Holy Grail War after witnessing a night battle between Servants, inadvertently summoning Saber to become her Master.
Appearance
Shirou is a young man with short, unkempt orange hair, yellow eyes, a baby face, and a toned, athletic physique. He bears a burn scar on his right shoulder from the fire ten years ago, which is exposed when participating in traditional archery ritual shooting. He typically wears a white shirt with distinctive blue raglan sleeves or his Homurabara Academy uniform. He is also depicted in traditional Japanese clothes with an archery arm guard (igote) and a cape. Depending on the story path, his left arm is replaced with Archer's arm tightly wrapped in a Holy Shroud, or his soul is housed inside a puppet body crafted by Touko Aozaki.
Personality
Shirou is honest, calm, and practical. He excels at domestic tasks, including cooking Japanese and Western dishes, cleaning, and repairing discarded or broken electronic appliances. However, beneath his helpful personality lies a heavily warped mindset forged by severe survivor's guilt. He lacks basic self-preservation and feels compelled to self-sacrifice for the sake of others, operating under a borrowed ideal that leads observers to compare his intense selflessness to a machine mimicking human behavior. He harbors a deep, instinctual aversion toward Kotomine Kirei, driven by a subtle subconscious recognition that both derive their purpose through external misfortune.
Abilities
While an novice in standard magecraft, Shirou possesses uniquely specialized capabilities. He can use Structural Analysis to discern the internal blueprints of objects and Reinforcement to enhance their physical properties. His true capability lies in his Reality Marble, Unlimited Blade Works, which grants him Projection magic capable of recreating understood weapons and Noble Phantasms, as well as briefly accessing the martial skill and combat memories of their wielders. Projected Noble Phantasms drop by one rank, and weapons outside the concept of swords, such as Ea, cannot be analyzed. Having Avalon embedded inside him altered his magical origin and attribute to "Sword," granting him rapid healing in Saber's proximity. He is also a master archer who hits tiny moving targets with complete precision. In specific routes, he accesses Archer's transplanted arm to utilize advanced projection knowledge, such as Rho Aias.
Background
Having lost his original family and memory in the great Fuyuki fire ten years ago, Shirou was saved from the brink of death by the magus Emiya Kiritsugu, who took him in. Admiring Kiritsugu deeply, Shirou convinced him to teach him basic magecraft. When Kiritsugu passed away five years later, Shirou pledged to fulfill his adoptive father's unreached dream of becoming a hero of justice, pursuing rigorous daily training. As a high school student, he stayed late after school and accidentally witnessed Servants Lancer and Archer in battle. Fatally pierced through the heart by Lancer to silence him, he was revived through Tohsaka Rin's jewel magic. Pursued home by Lancer shortly after, Shirou accidentally summoned Saber inside his shed, thrusting him into the Fifth Holy Grail War as a Master.
Relationships
Emiya Kiritsugu is Shirou's adoptive father, who bestowed upon him his core ideals. Shirou forms a profound bond with his Servant, Saber (Artoria Pendragon), mutually protecting one another. Tohsaka Rin acts as his mentor in magecraft and an essential ally. His underclassman Matou Sakura frequently visits his home to help with domestic work, becoming someone Shirou swears to protect even at the cost of his own ideal in one path. He shares warm familial ties with his guardian Fujimura Taiga and his adoptive sister Illyasviel von Einzbern. Conversely, he clashes ideologically with the Heroic Spirit EMIYA (Archer), who represents his future self, and engages in a fatal rivalry with the Grail War overseer Kotomine Kirei.
Trivia
Shirou's helpful habit of repairing equipment around school earned him friendly nicknames among students, including the "Brownie of Homurabara" and "Stupid Spanner." In Fate/Grand Order, the legendary Japanese blacksmith Senji Muramasa is summoned as a Pseudo-Servant using Shirou's body as a vessel. A past event where Shirou persistently attempted high jumps in the schoolyard despite continuous failures inadvertently left a lasting impression on both Tohsaka Rin and Matou Sakura. TYPE-MOON writer Kinoko Nasu noted that Shirou matures into his most compelling state as a magus user in his early twenties.
