Overview
Fuuma Kotarou is an Assassin-class Servant appearing in the mobile game Fate/Grand Order and related media. As the fifth leader of the Fuuma ninja clan that served the Go-Houjou clan during Japan's Sengoku period, he was selectively bred as a hybrid carrying the blood of both foreigners and Oni. Within the story, he serves as a quiet yet immensely reliable ally to the protagonist, featuring prominently in events such as Tenma Otogizoushi Onigashima and Epic of Remnant: Shimousa.
Appearance
Kotarou is a toned young male with short red hair that typically hangs down to cover both of his red eyes, though his sharp left eye becomes visible under certain ascensions. He wears a dark, sleeveless shinobi outfit accented with a bright red scarf, bandages wrapped around his limbs, gloves, and fingerless gloves. Additionally, he possesses a modern casual attire termed Shinobi Attire for Summer Enjoyment, which includes a deep-brimmed hat.
Personality
Kotarou is humble, soft-spoken, and reserved, often referring to himself with the modest pronoun boku. Despite being bred as a lethal tool of war, he possesses a gentle and thoughtful nature that originally made him reluctant to engage in bloodshed. When comfortable around others, he exhibits youthful excitement and deeply admires Sakata Kintoki as a legendary figure from his homeland. He harbors a subtle distrust toward samurai and their societal order, yet maintains unwavering loyalty and a strict personal code regarding what it truly means to be a shinobi.
Abilities
Kotarou relies on swift movement and a varied arsenal including dual kunai, a kusarigama, massive Fuuma shuriken, and explosive pellets. He can deploy high-level disguise techniques, create physical illusions, and manipulate flame to produce fiery pillars. His skills grant superior presence concealment, enemy sabotage before engagement, support maneuvers to grant allies evasion, and psychological pressure that weakens target resolve. His Noble Phantasm, Immortal Chaos Brigade, summons ghostly apparitions of his ninja troupe to envelope foes in darkness and swirling flames. He also possesses a self-transformation Noble Phantasm, Ouga Trans, which dramatically boosts his bodily capabilities by reverting his bloodline into a true Oni at heavy physical cost.
Background
The Fuuma clan originally lived as peaceful villagers under the name Kazama, taking up the mantle of Fuuma only when called upon to strike terror into enemies. As the fifth leader, Kotarou was created through generations of selective breeding to be the ultimate shinobi, serving leaders of the Go-Houjou clan such as Houjou Ujitsuna. Historical accounts recall his raiding tactics, such as relentless night assaults against the Takeda army. Following the fall of their patrons, the clan scattered. Upon being summoned as a Servant, he pledges his stealth and combat expertise entirely to supporting the protagonist.
Relationships
He addresses the protagonist with deep respect as his Master, offering absolute loyalty and occasionally sharing shinobi techniques. He holds immense admiration for Sakata Kintoki due to their shared connection to Mount Ashigara, engaging in warm, casual bonds with him. He shares a complex and poignant connection with the automaton ninja Katou Danzou. Conversely, he holds strong resentment toward those responsible for his clan's downfall and execution, including Tokugawa Ieyasu, and reacted with intense irritation toward Sasaki Kojirou when the latter insulted the Fuuma clan's reputation relative to the Iga and Kouga schools.
Trivia
The inclusion of foreign terminology in his Noble Phantasm title and combat shouts stems from his backstory of inheriting Western heritage from his father. While he enjoys meticulously maintaining his equipment, he harbors intense distaste for fellow mercenaries who neglect weapon maintenance or anyone who disrespects the honor of the Fuuma name.
