Historically one of the Four Guardian Kings serving Minamoto no Raikou during the Heian period, he is the legendary warrior who served as the basis for the folk hero Kintaro. Originally created during the early planning stages of Fate/Apocrypha, he is a Berserker-class Servant who retains clear reasoning and a strong sense of justice, often expressing his chivalrous spirit through his fond use of the word "Golden."
Appearance
He is a muscular male with blue eyes and a blonde short bob, styled with sunglasses and an attire resembling modern delinquent fashion. His outfit incorporates fingerless gloves, arm guards (igote), a chest harness, a headband, and various jewelry, featuring a design with a single bare shoulder. In certain instances, he also wears his traditional Heian-period battle armor.
Personality
Kintoki is a warm, big-brother figure with a straightforward and dependable nature. He possesses an uncompromising sense of justice, readily acting as a protector of the innocent while adhering strictly to societal rules. Despite his tough outer appearance, he is pure-hearted and remarkably timid when dealing with romance or immodest clothing. He has a strong affection for anything high-spirited or powerful, regularly adopting the word "Golden" into his everyday speech.
Abilities
Inheriting the lineage of a thunder god and a yamanba, Kintoki possesses immense physical strength and a naturally perfect body that maintains its muscular condition regardless of caloric intake. His low level of Madness Enhancement leaves his intellect intact, though severe damage can cause him to lose control and turn entirely red. He holds the ability to communicate with animals and wields a massive axe charged with lightning, using explosive cartridges to deliver heavy strikes or release vast electrical discharges known as Golden Spark. Additionally, he exhibits Rider-class compatibility, utilizing a transforming motorcycle called the Bear and activating the armor known as Settsu-shiki Oogusoku Kumano.
Background
Born to a red dragon thunder deity and a mountain witch of Mount Ashigara, Kintoki grew up among wild animals before being taken in by Minamoto no Raikou, under whom he learned humanity and became the youngest of the Four Guardian Kings. He gained legendary renown for slaying the oni Shuten-douji on Mount Ooe; however, the deceptive method of using poisoned wine left him with lifelong remorse. In life, his blue eyes were said to possess a rare spiritual vision, though he remained unaware of its true nature.
Relationships
He holds deep respect for his lord and mentor Minamoto no Raikou, though her overbearing maternal affection often overwhelms him. He looks up to Watanabe no Tsunas and Usui Sadamitsu as senior figures among the Four Guardian Kings. His history with Shuten-douji is complex, marked by lingering guilt over how he defeated her in life, while also maintaining ties with Ibaraki-douji, Tamamo no Mae, and Ashiya Douman. He treats his Master, Fujimaru Ritsuka, as an equal partner, referring to them affectionately as "Boss."
Trivia
Originally conceived for an online game project version of Fate/Apocrypha, his inclusion was initially shelved due to story balance considerations and setting adjustments before being re-introduced in spin-off titles and Fate/Grand Order. True to his theme, he takes a fond liking to things named or colored golden, as well as the Golden Week holiday period.
