Overview

Yui Shousetsu is a character appearing in Fate/Samurai Remnant and Fate/Grand Order. Based on the historical early-Edo period military scholar of the same name, the Fate series depicts her as a female who disguises her gender while running a military academy called Choukoudou in Edo, where she earns the deep admiration of many ronin. She enters the Waxing Moon Ritual as the Master of Rider and later appears as a 4-star Caster-class Servant in Fate/Grand Order.

Appearance

Shousetsu is 160 cm tall (165 cm with heels) and has greenish-grey hair tied into a high ponytail with straight-cut ends, paired with green eyes. She wears long red cloth earrings hanging down near her thighs. Despite being over 30 years old, she has a youthful, androgynous appearance resembling a teenager or someone under 20. Her Command Seals are located on the back of her right hand, hidden by a gauntlet. In Fate/Samurai Remnant, she wears traditional male samurai attire. In Fate/Grand Order, her outfits vary across Ascensions, ranging from a high-cut tight bodysuit to traditional samurai clothing and a hybrid long dress worn over a bodysuit.

Personality

Shousetsu possesses a pure, innocent, and deeply sincere nature, placing great value on righteousness and following a noble human path. While easily liked by children and animals, she is wary of cunning individuals. She strives to remain cold and calculated as a military strategist, yet she inwardly struggles with ruthless schemes and recoils from violent tragedy, proving her soul is fundamentally ill-suited for warfare. She adheres strictly to her code of refusing to cut down opponents who lack awareness of being Masters. Her driving motivation is a selfless desire to establish a peaceful, equal world free of suffering.

Abilities

As a homunculus subspecies created using Einzbern-derived techniques, Shousetsu possesses high natural regeneration, allowing her to recover from most injuries. Her Magic Circuits have Rank A Quality, Rank D Quantity, and an abnormal composition. In combat, she fights as a magic swordsman combining solid swordplay with elemental magecraft, releasing fireballs, trapping foes in water puddles to fire slashing waves, employing wind blades, cloaking her sword in explosive energy, and calling forth geysers. She holds Class Skills Territory Creation C+ and Item Construction C, along with Personal Skills Counterfeit Life (Subspecies) C, Military Tactics of the Martyr B, and Magecraft (Elemental) B+. Her Anti-Army Noble Phantasm, Resshijunmei Fushyakushinmyou, restores allies' HP and grants offensive buffs based on their active Quick, Arts, or Buster performance enhancements.

Background

Created by the sorcerer Mori Souiken as an artificial homunculus, Shousetsu was taken in after his death by a samurai family in Sunpu, taking the name Yui Shousetsu. As she developed human self-awareness, she grew tormented by the cruelties of the world and resolved to seek the Waxing Moon to forge a peaceful society. She established the Choukoudou military academy in Kanda, Edo, gathering thousands of ronin disciples while secretly preparing for the Waxing Moon Ritual. Entering the conflict as Rider's Master, she contended with servant betrayal and strategic battles. Despite carrying the tragically short lifespan of a homunculus near its limit, she fought resolutely to see her ideals through.

Relationships

Shousetsu holds deep reverence for her creator, Mori Souiken, viewing him as a master and father figure. In the Waxing Moon Ritual, she contracts with Rider (Ushi Gozen), who initially obeys her before ultimately betraying her. She forms a complex bond with Miyamoto Iori, drawn to his noble path as a guiding light, though she is shaken in certain timelines upon realizing his underlying nature as a demon of the sword. She maintains guarded or hostile relations with temporary ally Chiemon and Assassin's Master, Dorothea Coyett. In Chaldea, she shows profound respect to Amakusa Shirou due to his ties with Souiken, and she interacts with fellow homunculi Irisviel von Einzbern and Sieg, as well as Murasaki Shikibu, who teaches her about modern culture.

Trivia

The name of her military academy, Choukoudou, is derived from the famous historical Chinese strategists Zhang Liang and Zhuge Liang. Historical records of Yui Shousetsu feature various alternate kanji spellings for the surname. In a Fate/Grand Order Valentine's Day event, she mistakenly believed chocolate was a type of foreign clay and crafted a miniature dry landscape garden out of it. Additionally, she is one of the few Servants in Fate/Grand Order who requires only 10,000 total Bond EXP points to reach Bond Level 5.
