Overview
Phantom of the Opera is a Servant appearing in the Fate franchise, notably Fate/Grand Order. His true name is Erik, the historical individual who served as the model for the titular figure in the 19th-century novel The Phantom of the Opera. Normally summoned under the Assassin class, he also manifests as a Berserker in the Shinjuku Sub-Singularity. Driven by an unrequited, obsessive love while hiding beneath a grand opera house, he tutored a young chorus girl into a famous diva through tragic and violent means. As a Servant, he remains a deeply warped figure obsessed with beautiful singing voices.
Appearance
He is a male standing 185 cm tall and weighing 80 kg, featuring black hair and red eyes. His cursed, monstrous face is concealed behind a skull mask. Due to his physical transformation, his arms are mutated into monstrous shapes, with long, sharp knife-like claws hidden beneath his gloves. Upon reaching his Third Ascension, his appearance transforms dramatically into a handsome, intellectual young man wearing glasses with normal human hands instead of claws.
Personality
Although he acts like a refined gentleman, this behavior is merely a performance to suppress the intense sorrow and fury boiling within him. Afflicted by severe mental instability, his thought process is completely distorted, making rational communication almost impossible. He typically speaks in a melodic, singing tone, but dropping this theatrical manner signals the emergence of his cold, murderous nature. He obsessively conflates his Master—regardless of their gender—with Christine, his beloved diva, showing fanatic devotion to their vocal training while harboring the dangerous urge to eliminate anyone with an unappealing voice.
Abilities
He possesses high-level Presence Concealment that allows stealthy movement and levitation, though attacking reduces its effectiveness. In combat, he attacks with long claws, drops chandeliers from above, and uses opera-house mechanisms to crush groups of enemies. His skills include Innocent Monster, which generates critical stars while lowering defense, along with skills that charm opponents with his voice or bolster his resistance to mental interference. His Noble Phantasm, Christine, Christine, utilizes a massive organ-like device built from the corpses of past victims; combined with his mutated vocal organs, it releases invisible magical attacks that bypass armor and defensive magecraft.
Background
Originating from the 19th-century European story The Phantom of the Opera, he lived in the extensive subterranean canals beneath an opera house. Falling in love with a chorus girl named Christine, he secretly instructed her under the guise of an Angel of Music, turning her into a star singer. However, his unbearable jealousy toward her suitor Raoul and his obsession led him to commit serial murders and terrorize the venue. In Fate/Grand Order, he is first summoned as an enemy Servant in the Orleans Singularity, and later appears as a Berserker aligned with the Phantom Demon Alliance in Shinjuku.
Relationships
He remains fixated on Christine Daaé, the singer he loved in life, projecting her identity onto his Master while attempting to coach them. He harbors intense hatred for his former romantic rival, Raoul de Chagny, having killed Raoul's brother in life. In Chaldea, he interacts with various Servants: Antonio Salieri avoids him due to incompatible wavelengths despite their shared musical background, while Gilles de Rais shares a strange mutual understanding with him over their tragic infatuations. He secretly envies Kiyohime for remaining true to her passion, and actively avoids Nightingale, who persistently attempts to cure his mental state.
Trivia
Regarding his Third Ascension design where he appears as a young man with glasses, illustrator Shima Udon envisioned the concept as a phantom possessing a young man's body. During seasonal events like Valentine's, when his sanity briefly returns, he shows his original polite personality as Erik. In the 2015 Christmas event, he assigned unique nicknames to fellow non-verbal Servants based on their visual appearances, calling Lu Bu Housen the Lord of Koinobori due to his scale armor and Darius III the Lord of Cyalume owing to his glowing markings and gold adornments.
