Overview
Leonidas I is a Lancer-class Servant appearing in the Fate series, notably featured in Fate/Grand Order. As the ancient King of Sparta—the historic city-state whose rigorous military culture inspired the phrase Spartan education—he gained enduring fame during the Battle of Thermopylae by holding off a massive invading Persian army of one hundred thousand soldiers with a force of only three hundred men. Outstandingly durable and disciplined, he serves as a devoted defensive warrior and shield to his Master.
Appearance
Leonidas is a tall, highly muscular male standing 188 centimeters tall and weighing 110 kilograms, featuring red hair and red eyes. His physique displays pronounced abdominal muscles, thick thighs, and broad biceps. He wears armor over a mostly exposed torso, accompanied by a flowing red cape and a helmet enveloped in burning flames. Armed with a spear and shield, he reveals his handsome, dignified face after removing his headgear upon reaching his Third Ascension.
Personality
Despite coming from a nation renowned for brute force, Leonidas possesses an intellectual curiosity with a love for mathematics and calculation. He frequently attempts to rationalize his muscle-centric tendencies when called out, creating humorous situations. Speaking rapidly in formal, polite language, he maintains an upright, gentlemanly posture and absolute loyalty toward his Master. Beneath his brave demeanor lies a strong dread of irrational phenomena such as ghosts and inexplicable insects.
Abilities
Leonidas possesses outstanding defensive resilience, highlighted by his A-rank Endurance. His Pride of the Rearguard skill draws enemy hostility while boosting NP gain, while Battle Continuation—which evolves into 300's Struggle—allows him to survive fatal strikes and buff his team upon triggering Guts. Warrior's Roar enhances allies' Buster attacks through disciplined breathing. His Noble Phantasm, Thermopylae Enomotia, summons his three hundred fallen Spartan comrades to form a phalanx that absorbs enemy offense and enables counterattacks.
Background
In life, Leonidas ruled Sparta and achieved legendary status at the Battle of Thermopylae by sacrificing himself and his men to delay the Persian army. In Fate/Grand Order, he is summoned to act as a protective guard for the Master. During the Seventh Singularity in Babylonia, King Gilgamesh summons him to defend Uruk's northern wall, where he trains local soldiers into capable combatants and holds off the Demonic Goddess Gorgon. He also appears in a Berserker-corrupted state in Fate/EXTRA Last Encore.
Relationships
Leonidas addresses his Master respectfully as Dono while enthusiastically designing physical training regimens for them. He shares a deep mutual respect with Mash Kyrielight, who admires his legacy as a fellow shield-bearer. Summoned by Gilgamesh in ancient Babylonia, he whipped Uruk's local garrison into battle-ready warriors. When confronting the Demonic Goddess Gorgon, he identified her divine identity and fought her with absolute honor.
Trivia
Leonidas humorously attributed his rise to the Spartan throne to being the only person in the realm capable of performing mathematical calculations. Among Servants in the Fate series, he holds the distinction of being the oldest figure whose real-world historical existence is definitively documented rather than legendary. In Chaldea, he regularly hosts intense fitness boot camps for the base's administrative staff.
