Overview
Charles Babbage is a Caster-class Servant featured in the Fate series, notably in Fate/Grand Order. Based on the historical 19th-century British mathematician and scientist honored as the Father of Computers, he manifests as a Heroic Spirit clad in a giant mechanical suit embodying his unrealized vision of a steam-powered future. Known as the King of Steam, he is a genius scholar and passionate dreamer who dedicated his life to introducing advanced calculating machines to the world.
Appearance
Charles Babbage is completely encased in a massive suit of steel mechanical armor, standing over 250 centimeters tall and weighing more than 500 kilograms. His visual design combines a giant robot with classic gentleman's attire, incorporating motifs of a top hat, bow tie, tailcoat, and walking stick. The armor features a single glowing eye alongside visible steam vents, gears, and cylinders. The armor cannot be removed, and no one has ever seen what lies inside.
Personality
Charles Babbage possesses a strict yet deeply gentlemanly demeanor. Beneath his intimidating mechanical shell lies a compassionate individual devoted to his dream of an advanced steam-powered civilization. Despite his absolute commitment to his ideals, he remains highly rational and protective of human lives. He exhibits a soft spot for innocent or clever young maidens. In Chaldea, he demonstrates his meticulous scholar nature by continuously running background calculations on system operations to catch small bugs.
Abilities
Through integration with his Noble Phantasm, Babbage gains the skill Item Construction (Fake), allowing him to create magical armaments and elixirs despite not being a magus. His Single-Mindedness skill provides superhuman focus that boosts his creation capabilities. His Mechanical Armor skill permanently enhances his physical Strength and Endurance while providing propulsion options. By intentionally forcing his steam engine into overdrive through Overload, he can dramatically boost his combat output at the cost of taking internal damage. His Noble Phantasm, Dimension of Steam, is a Reality Marble bound to his body that deploys an idealized steam world and fires destructive thermal steam blasts.
Background
In his historical lifetime, Babbage designed the Difference Engine and Analytical Engine, laying the foundation for modern computer science before passing away with his machines unfinished. Upon being summoned as a Heroic Spirit, his unrealized ambition manifested as a giant steam-powered mechanical suit. In Fate/Grand Order, he initially appears in the London Singularity as one of the conspirators known as B. Maintaining his moral integrity, he entrusts the resolution of the crisis to Sherlock Holmes before falling. Later, he pledges his strength to Master Ritsuka Fujimaru as a reliable ally.
Relationships
Babbage holds a deeply protective, guardian-like affection for Frankenstein, the creation of his historical acquaintance Victor Frankenstein. He fondly remembers his historical disciple Ada Lovelace and her programming achievements. During the London Singularity, he entrusted the investigation of the human order's collapse to Sherlock Holmes. He has also exchanged encouraging messages via Morse code with Thomas Edison. In London, he was forced into battle against his will by Makiri Zolgen using Command Seals.
Trivia
His visual design motif is a Victorian steam gentleman wearing a top hat, bow tie, tailcoat, and carrying a cane. During a summer event, Professor M modified his mechanical armor, granting him a high-speed mobility mode known as the Babbage Locomotive Form. In Chaldea, heat complaints caused by his steam exhausts during the summer were solved by installing a recycling mechanism that repurposed the steam for beauty treatments. In the real world, preserved portions of Babbage's engine designs and his brain are kept at the Science Museum in London.
