Overview
Fou is a mascot-like small animal who appears in Fate/Grand Order. Originally seen wandering freely around the Chaldea Security Organization, he becomes attached to Mash Kyrielight and Ritsuka Fujimaru after meeting them, frequently sneaking into Rayshifts to accompany them on their journeys through Singularities.
Appearance
Fou is a small creature covered in fluffy white fur, featuring a remarkably large and bushy tail. His unique form leads different people to perceive him variously as a squirrel, a dog, or a cat.
Personality
While behaving like an adorable pet, Fou fully understands human speech and possesses a surprisingly sharp-tongued, cynical inner monologue. He generally warms only to Ritsuka Fujimaru and Mash Kyrielight, while harboring intense resentment toward his former master, Merlin, whom he attacks whenever given the chance. He prefers serene environments and pure-hearted individuals, avoiding dense human malice.
Abilities
As the larval state of Beast IV, he possesses the inherent trait of 'Comparison,' absorbing human envy and rivalry to grow infinitely stronger, alongside the 'Independent Manifestation' skill that lets him freely cross into Singularities. At the end of Part 1, he expended centuries' worth of stored magical energy to resurrect Mash Kyrielight and extend her lifespan to that of a normal human.
Background
His true identity is Cath Palug, the mythical beast of Arthurian legend, and the larva of Beast IV (Primate Murder). Originally kept in the tower of Avalon, he was turned out into the world by Merlin and eventually arrived at Chaldea. Exposure to the pure hearts of Ritsuka and Mash prevented his growth into a calamity. By relinquishing his magical power to save Mash, he gave up his Beast intellect and abilities, becoming an ordinary animal.
Relationships
Mash Kyrielight is his primary caregiver who named him, and he trusts her deeply. He is similarly attached to Ritsuka Fujimaru, remaining by their side. In contrast, he harbors immense bitterness toward his former master Merlin, attacking him on sight. Members of the Knights of the Round Table, such as Artoria Pendragon and Mordred, react with vague familiarity upon encountering him.
Trivia
In the mobile game, he serves as enhancement material used to boost a Servant's stats. His running silhouette in the lower-right corner of the loading screen is famous among players, becoming an inside joke whenever server congestion forces him to run indefinitely during extended maintenance.
