Overview
Mordred is a prominent character in the Fate franchise, inspired by the legendary Knight of Rebellion from Arthurian myth. First highlighted in Fate/Apocrypha as the Saber of Red, she is the child of Artoria Pendragon and Morgan le Fay. Summoned by the necromancer Kairi Shishigou using a fragment of the Round Table, she competes in the Great Holy Grail War. She also features as a playable Servant in Fate/Grand Order and various spin-off works.
Appearance
Mordred has blonde hair styled into a ponytail with braids and secured by a red scrunchie, paired with green eyes. Her face strongly resembles Artoria Pendragon, though she lacks an ahoge and has thinner eyebrows and shorter sideburns. In combat, she wears heavy silver and red armor accompanied by a sheep-horned helmet known as Secret of Pedigree, which conceals her identity and features.
Personality
Mordred is a brash and hot-tempered warrior who refers to herself with the masculine pronoun ore. She loathes being treated as a woman, yet takes equal offense at being casually treated as a man. Valuing victory, honor, and glory while abhorring defeat or being ignored, she harbors a deeply conflicted relationship toward her father, Artoria Pendragon, combining a yearning for recognition with rebellious anger.
Abilities
Serving in the Saber class, Mordred possesses exceptional combat skills with a specialty in surprise attacks. She carries the identity-concealing helmet Secret of Pedigree and the royal sword Clarent, utilizing her ultimate Noble Phantasm Clarent Blood Arthur in battle. In her alternative summer form, she manifests under the Rider class and fights while riding a surfboard.
Background
Mordred was created by Morgan le Fay as a homunculus child of Artoria Pendragon, intended to bring about the destruction of Arthurian Britain. Though she joined the Knights of the Round Table, her growing resentment culminated in a fateful rebellion that ended in mutual slayings at the Battle of Camlann. In Fate/Apocrypha, she is summoned by Kairi Shishigou to fight in the Great Holy Grail War.
Relationships
Mordred maintains a complex, conflicted relationship with her father, Artoria Pendragon, driven by an intense desire for acknowledgment and deep rebellion. She was engineered by her mother, Morgan le Fay, as a pawn for vengeance. In Fate/Apocrypha, she forms a remarkably cohesive and trusting partnership with her Master, Kairi Shishigou. In spin-offs like Koha-Ace, she affectionately refers to Okita Souji as a mother figure.
Trivia
Originally conceptualized as male in early Fate/stay night background material, Mordred's gender was shifted to female for Fate/Apocrypha after writer Yuuichiro Higashide suggested avoiding thematic overlap with Astolfo. Her popular fandom nickname Mo-san originated in the parody manga Koha-Ace. The anime adaptation of Fate/Apocrypha features her character image song, The Knight of Rebellion.
