Van Gogh

Van Gogh is a Foreigner-class Servant featured in the mobile game Fate/Grand Order. While the historical Vincent van Gogh was a 19th-century male Dutch painter, this Servant manifests as a young girl. In truth, she is a composite Heroic Spirit artificially constructed by an Outer God. Her Spirit Origin is predominantly composed of Clytie, a water nymph from Greek mythology, blended with an element from imaginary numbers and a small fraction of the historic painter's memories and artistic brilliance.

Overview

Van Gogh is a Foreigner-class Servant featured in the mobile game Fate/Grand Order. While the historical Vincent van Gogh was a 19th-century male Dutch painter, this Servant manifests as a young girl. In truth, she is a composite Heroic Spirit artificially constructed by an Outer God. Her Spirit Origin is predominantly composed of Clytie, a water nymph from Greek mythology, blended with an element from imaginary numbers and a small fraction of the historic painter's memories and artistic brilliance.

Appearance

She stands 140 cm tall and weighs 39 kg, appearing as a petite girl with braided hair and puffy sleeves. Her initial look includes orange hair and light blue eyes, which shift to white hair and white pupils in later Ascensions. She wears blue overalls and a hat adorned with sunflower motifs, while carrying a massive paintbrush. Her left ear is concealed beneath her hair and a ribbon. As her Ascension progresses, her appearance incorporates pale, otherworldly skin, elements resembling flowers and jellyfish, and attire reminiscent of mourning clothes.

Personality

She possesses a timid, self-deprecating, and gloomy demeanor, struggling with emotional instability that oscillates between sanity and madness. She has a habit of blurting out bizarre "Gogh jokes" with unsmiling eyes. Confronted with the mismatch between her memories as a man and her female physical body, she easily becomes hysterical and turns to self-harm. Despite her fragile impression, she can be surprisingly sharp-witted. She treats fellow artists as equals and grows more aggressive in later forms.

Abilities

In combat, she attacks using a massive paintbrush, a buzzsaw-like sunflower, and paint-projectile tools. Her skills include Void Space Art, Soul of the Sea-Mark, and Curse of Sunflowers; the latter prevents her from dying by suicide, transforming such acts into floral manifestations instead. Her Noble Phantasm, De Sterrennacht, creates a Reality Marble that manipulates Saint Graphs and massively buffs allies with the Existence Outside the Domain trait. Her second Noble Phantasm, Het Gele Huis, recreates her house in Arles, unleashing harsh winds on enemies while granting protections and curses to allies.

Background

The historical painter Vincent van Gogh struggled with mental illness throughout his life—famously severing his own ear—before passing away at age 37. As a Servant, this entity was assembled by an Outer God: 80% of her Spirit Origin comes from Clytie, a Greek water nymph who turned into a flower after losing Apollo's affection; 15% stems from a void space element; and only 5% contains Van Gogh's memories and talent. Tormented by the inner contradiction of her identity, she searches for her path while aiding her Master.

Relationships

She holds deep memories of Vincent's brother Theo, who supported him in life, as well as Theo's wife Johanna, his artistic mentor Anton Mauve, and Paul Gauguin. Within Fate/Grand Order, she develops a close bond with Captain Nemo, who also shares a composite nature. She also maintains friendly relations with fellow Foreigners and artist Servants such as Katsushika Hokusai, Yang Guifei, and Tutankhamun.

Trivia

Her design heavily incorporates Vincent van Gogh's historical preferences, such as sunflowers, cypress trees, and ukiyo-e prints. In Interlude content, her paintbrush acquires a virtual personality named "Willem"—derived from Van Gogh's middle name—granting her access to a third Noble Phantasm. Additionally, an alternate Lancer-class variant wearing miner attire exists, known as Van Gogh (Miner).
