Overview
Matou Kariya is a Master in the Fourth Holy Grail War, featured in Fate/Zero, where he commands the Berserker-class Servant. He is the uncle of Matou Shinji. Having originally cut ties with his mage lineage to live as an ordinary civilian, he voluntarily re-enters the dark world of magecraft to rescue a young girl adopted into his family, risking his own life in the process.
Appearance
Originally possessing short black hair with a prominent hair tuft, his physical appearance degrades drastically after being implanted with crest worms. His hair turns completely white, his skin becomes sickly pale, and he loses vision in his left eye. He typically dresses in a black turtleneck sweater paired with a blue hoodie.
Personality
Rejecting the cold, pragmatic mindset typical of magi, Matou Kariya retains the moral values and emotional sensibility of an ordinary person, cherishing quiet domestic life. While driven by a noble desire to protect loved ones and a willingness to suffer for their sake, his inability to grasp the full reality of the situations around him causes his well-meaning devotion to turn into tragic self-deception.
Abilities
Matou Kariya employs insect-manipulation magecraft imparted by Matou Zouken. His primary technique involves controlling swarms of carnivorous insects called Shibachuu, which possess the power to crush bovine bones, including variants engineered with heat-resistant carapaces. The parasitic crest worms implanted throughout his body function as temporary pseudo-magic circuits that drain his life force to generate mana. Consequently, using magecraft causes immense physical agony, severe bodily destruction, and vomiting of blood. Furthermore, supporting the extraordinarily high mana consumption of his Berserker-class Servant continually rapidly exhausts his failing health.
Background
Despite possessing higher magic aptitudes than his older sibling, Matou Kariya despised the Matou family's insidious practices and fled the household eleven years prior to work as a freelance writer. Upon learning that Sakura, the younger daughter of his childhood friend Tohsaka Aoi, had been adopted into the Matou family to undergo torturous training, he returned to negotiate with Matou Zouken. He struck a deal to deliver the Holy Grail in exchange for Sakura's freedom, subjecting himself to horrific crest worm implantation to acquire the minimal capabilities needed to participate in the war.
Relationships
Matou Kariya has harbored unrequited feelings for Tohsaka Aoi since childhood and prioritizes her happiness. He directs immense resentment toward her husband, Tohsaka Tokiomi, whom he views as responsible for forcing his own family into tragic circumstances. He detests Matou Zouken as a cruel tormentor, while maintaining a distant relationship with his elder brother Matou Tsuruno. He feels protective affection toward young Tohsaka Rin and Matou Sakura, whereas his bond with his Servant, Berserker, remains purely tactical and strained due to the Servant's madness and heavy mana toll.
Trivia
Due to his sympathetic motivations and tragic trajectory in the narrative, he gained widespread popularity among viewers, often referred to affectionately by fans as 'Uncle Kariya.' In spin-off media such as Fate/Grand Order, his painful plight and doomed determination are memorialized through specific Concept Cards and altered storyline scenarios.
