Background
In Finnish mythology and the Kalevala epic, Louhi rules over the northern territory of Pohjola as a formidable witch. She raised beautiful daughters and tested their suitors with dangerous feats. When the blacksmith Ilmarinen forged the magic mill Sampo, capable of generating endless wealth, she granted him her daughter's hand, bringing prosperity to Pohjola. However, after the wise hero Väinämöinen conspired to steal Sampo, a fierce battle ensued that destroyed the artifact. Enraged, Louhi retaliated by unleashing plagues and capturing the sun and moon. Mythological traditions also link her to the death goddess Loviatar.
Relationships
She immediately adopts her Master, Fujimaru Ritsuka, into her family as a prospective child-in-law regardless of gender, showing protective warmth. Conversely, she harbors absolute hatred for the hero-bard Väinämöinen due to his theft of Sampo, becoming visibly enraged at any mention of his name. She views her son-in-law, the blacksmith Ilmarinen, with suspicion due to his volatile nature. She also shares a mythical connection with the death goddess Loviatar, and coexists in Chaldea with Sitonai, who houses Louhi's spirit as one of her components.
Trivia
Her characterization incorporates real-world Finnish customs and music, such as her fondness for Salmiakki and her habit of humming the folk song "Ievan Polkka." Additionally, the reading of her Noble Phantasm changes depending on her Ascension stage.
