Overview

Harada Sanosuke is a Lancer-class Servant appearing in the Fate series, including Fate/Grand Order. He is the heroic spirit of the Tenth Unit Captain of the Shinsengumi, a late-Edo period security force. Known for his high agility, martial prowess, and uncanny luck, he makes a formal appearance as a playable Servant in the GUDAGUDA Shinsengumi The End event.

Appearance

Harada Sanosuke is a tall, muscular man standing 187 cm tall and weighing 78 kg, featuring short hair, sharp eyes, and a deep horizontal seppuku scar across his abdomen. His attire includes a black sleeveless shirt, pants, and an optional traditional light blue (teal) haori with a hakama. He carries a katana at his waist and wields a unique spear with a worn tip that conceals numerous internal chains, allowing it to transform into a five-section staff.

Personality

Despite his intimidating look, Sanosuke is a calm and remarkably good-natured man. He possesses a strict athletic mindset, placing immense value on seniority and hierarchy. He addresses superiors and even younger individuals who are higher in rank with natural politeness, strictly maintaining a respectful manner with his Master as his employer. However, once permitted to drop formalities, he instantly adopts an easygoing tone. In battle, his cool-headed disposition gives way to a fierce, unruly fighting spirit.

Abilities

Sanosuke possesses exceptional agility and physical stats as a spearman. His weapon, seemingly a conventional spear, functions as a five-section staff with internal chains, enabling erratic combat maneuvers such as extendable strikes, whip-like slams, and spinning multi-slashes alongside standard thrusts. His Noble Phantasm, Shizokone Ichimonji, activates by slashing his own abdominal scar with a sword, manipulating probability to miraculously dodge fatal damage and survive extreme lethal encounters.

Background

Born into a family of samurai servants in the Matsuyama Domain, Sanosuke left home, mastered spear technique, and eventually became a guest at the Shieikan. Joining the founding members of the Shinsengumi, he served as the Tenth Unit Captain and fought through historical clashes such as the Ikedaya and Aburano-koji Incidents. Though secretly dispatched as a bakufu spy, he grew genuinely fond of his comrades. Rather than perishing in the Battle of Ueno, he survived to cross over to the Asian continent and lived out his days as a horse bandit.

Relationships

Sanosuke shares a strong bond with his former Shieikan comrades, including Kondou Isami, Hijikata Toshizou, Okita Souji, Saitou Hajime, and Yamanami Keisuke. He is particularly close with Nagakura Shinpachi and Toudou Heisuke, addressing Nagakura informally. Though initially assigned to monitor Kiyokawa Hachirou, he remained loyal to his group, and Kondou later helped him escape during the Shinsengumi's decline. As a Servant, he holds deep respect for Houzouin Inshun's martial arts and shows dedicated loyalty to his Master, Fujimaru Ritsuka.

Trivia

His moniker 'Sanosuke Who Failed to Die' stems from a youthful incident where he committed actual seppuku during an argument with a superior officer and miraculously survived. The visual effects displayed during his Noble Phantasm resemble the Harada family crest. While historical texts associate him with the Taneda or Houzouin spear traditions, he personally claims his skills are an amalgam of various styles rather than a single tradition.
