Overview
A Servant appearing across the Fate franchise, Cú Chulainn is the legendary hero of the Ulster Cycle in Celtic mythology, born of the sun god Lugh and known by epithets such as the Child of Light and Hound of Culann. While he is summoned across various Servant classes and spin-off titles, his Lancer incarnation depicted in Fate/Prototype represents a slightly younger stage of his physical and mental development compared to his counterpart in Fate/stay night.
Appearance
He features slicked-back blue hair with bangs falling to the left side and a relatively short ponytail bound at the back, paired with red eyes. Rather than full-body tights, he wears intricate light armor. His attire is accented with dog-themed accessories, including a collar around his neck, a necklace styled after a hound, and a pelt of fur draped over his left shoulder.
Personality
Wild, blunt, and high-spirited, he possesses a fundamentally agreeable and noble nature. Though he refrains from lecturing others on morality or weighing good against evil, his actions naturally align with justice. Lacking the detached maturity to passively accept the world's unfairness, he retains a passionate and youthful idealism. He also displays a natural affinity for animals, bonding remarkably well with canine creatures.
Abilities
Renowned for his exceptional Agility, he combines masterful spear techniques with Rune Magecraft, enabling versatile parameter enhancements and defensive wards. His Protection from Arrows skill allows him to evade virtually all incoming ranged projectiles, while his Beast Killer technique deals heavy damage against wild animals and monstrous beasts. His primary Noble Phantasm is the red spear Gáe Bolg, which can be utilized either as an anti-unit thrust that reverses causality to guarantee a fatal strike to the heart or as an anti-army thrown attack that splits into a barrage of destructive strikes.
Background
In life, he trained under the legendary warrior Scáthach in the Land of Shadows, receiving the demonic spear Gáe Bolg alongside her martial knowledge. During the Holy Grail War of Fate/Prototype, he is initially summoned by Reiroukan Misaya, who restricts his use of his Noble Phantasm. After Misaya falls victim to dark powers and is turned into a walking corpse, their contract is broken. He subsequently forms a new pact with Sajyou Ayaka on the condition that he grant Misaya a peaceful death, going on to defend Ayaka against the undead Servants controlled by Manaka.
Relationships
He respects his initial Master, Reiroukan Misaya, despite her strictness and her sealing of his Noble Phantasm, as her demanding nature reminds him of his former mentor, Scáthach. Following Misaya's tragic fate, he binds himself to Sajyou Ayaka, serving as her protector. He maintains a deep devotion and reverent attachment to his master Scáthach. In battle, he faces Saber (Arthur Pendragon) as a formidable rival before joining forces to stand against a shared threat.
Trivia
The concept of Gáe Bolg's causality reversal was the very first Noble Phantasm designed by author Kinoko Nasu during the initial planning of the Fate franchise. The physical armor design for his Fate/Prototype incarnation was crafted by artist Ototsugu Konoe. Despite his prowess, he is famously characterized by a low Luck stat, leaving him prone to tragic twists of fate. His personal interests include fishing, skin diving, and mountain climbing, and he is fond of strong-willed women and reckless promises.
