Overview

Amuro Ray is a main character in the Universal Century timeline of the Gundam series, debuting in Mobile Suit Gundam and serving as the protagonist of Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack. Originally an introverted youth, he becomes the pilot of the Earth Federation's RX-78-2 Gundam during the One Year War. Feared by enemy forces as the White Devil due to his unrivaled combat record and awakening as a Newtype, he develops an enduring rivalry with Char Aznable. In later conflicts, he plays key roles in Karaba and the Londo Bell task force as an elite pilot.

Appearance

Amuro features short brown hair and blue eyes. He stands 168 cm tall during the One Year War and the Gryps War, later growing to 172 cm by the Second Neo Zeon War. He is routinely dressed in Earth Federation uniforms or spacesuits, outfitted with a helmet, jacket, and pilot gloves.

Personality

Amuro possesses an introverted yet stubborn demeanor. Though initially reserved and focused on machinery, he shows strong determination and does not hesitate to voice discontent against authority when he deems it necessary. Driven by a intense hate of losing, he seeks self-improvement whenever confronted by skilled opponents. In combat, he maintains a highly pragmatic and rational mindset, showing cold efficiency to defeat his targets. While often lacking traditional military formality in off-duty moments, his tactical resolve on the battlefield is absolute.

Abilities

Amuro is an extraordinary pilot equipped with supreme Newtype spatial awareness and mechanical aptitude. Entering combat with no prior military training, he mastered the RX-78-2 Gundam on his first attempt and went on to record legendary kill counts. He exhibits mastery over various mobile suits including the Rick Dias, Dijeh, Re-GZ, and RX-93 ν Gundam, executing complex maneuvers, high-speed marksmanship, and close-quarters fighting. Furthermore, he serves as a skilled mechanic who performs maintenance on his own machines and quickly assesses complex technology such as magnet coating and psycho-frames.

Background

Born to Tem and Kamaria Ray, Amuro spent his childhood on Earth before relocating to space with his father. Living in Side 7, his peaceful life ended when a Zeon attack forced him into the cockpit of the experimental Gundam. Serving aboard the White Base, he survived numerous clashes in the One Year War, developing into a formidable mobile suit ace. Following the war, his Newtype powers led the Federation to place him under surveillance, but he eventually escaped to join Karaba during the Gryps War. Later appointed commander of the Londo Bell mobile suit squad, he fought to prevent the asteroid Axis from impacting Earth, ultimately disappearing alongside Char Aznable in the conflict's climax.

Relationships

Amuro shares a lifelong, turbulent rivalry with Zeon ace Char Aznable, engaging in ideological and physical clashes across decades. He serves under Bright Noa, maintaining a deep mutual trust despite early friction. Fraw Bow is his childhood friend from Side 7, while Hayato Kobayashi and Kai Shiden are long-time comrades from their days on the White Base. His tragic encounter with the young Zeon Newtype Lalah Sune deeply impacted his psyche and permanently shaped his dynamic with Char. In later years, he forms romantic bonds with Beltorchika Irma and Chan Agi.

Trivia

During his youth, Amuro assembled the spherical pet robot Haro, which became an iconic element of the franchise. While he stands as an unmatched combat aviator and talented engineer who heavily influenced the design of the ν Gundam, he is notably poor at espionage, once having his cover immediately blown while attempting a undercover operation at a local bar.
