Ginn
The GINN (model number ZGMF-1017) is a general-purpose mass-production mobile suit introduced in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED and its Cosmic Era spin-offs. Developed by the Heinlein Design Bureau of ZAFT, it stands as the history's first general-purpose mass-produced mobile suit. Deployed as the main backbone of the ZAFT military in the early stages of the Bloody Valentine War, it overwhelmed conventional Earth Alliance forces. Known for its remarkable versatility and balanced performance, it laid the structural and technological foundation for subsequent mobile suit engineering across all factions, remaining active in security and specialized variant roles long after newer models emerged.
Overview
Appearance
The GINN features a distinct red single mono-eye main camera mounted inside its head, crowned by a prominent crest-like sensor array housing multiple radars. Its primary propulsion relies on a broad rear wing-binder backpack equipped with articulated bellows nozzles and paddles. Smaller thrusters are built into the calves, outer legs, toes, and heels. The dual-layer armored cockpit hatch opens in a unified direction and utilizes explosive bolts for emergency release. Circular hardpoints for mounting hand-held and auxiliary weaponry are located on both sides of the waist, the rear waist, and the outer leg assemblies.
Abilities
Built around a human-like motor-driven frame using synchronized electric motors, the GINN balances armor, firepower, and mobility, boasting performance compared to combining warship firepower, tank armor, and fighter jet agility. It relies on an operating system engineered specifically for the neurological reflex capacities of Coordinators. Standard weapons include the molecular-processed MA-M3 Heavy Sword for sharp physical slicing and the high-rate-of-fire MMI-M8A3 76mm Heavy Assault Machine Gun. It can also mount modular ordnance such as the M68 Cattus 500mm Recoilless Rifle, M66 Canis missile launchers, M68 Pardus 3-leg missile pods, and M69 Balrus Kai heavy particle cannon.
Background
Mass-produced in secret within the Mayius colony between C.E. 67 and 69, the GINN was unveiled during the battle in the L5 region in C.E. 69, instantly routing conventional Earth Alliance forces. This overwhelming defeat directly prompted the Alliance to establish its G-Project mobile suit program. While outclassed later in the war by beam-weapon-equipped units like the Strike Dagger, the GINN's large production volume kept it in service. Even as ZAFT introduced newer units such as the CGUE, GuAIZ, and ZAKU Warrior, the GINN saw continuous deployment through C.E. 72, the Second Bloody Valentine War in C.E. 73, and remaining active as late as C.E. 75 within local defense forces and civilian sectors.
Relationships
While primarily operated by standard ZAFT pilots, customized and unique color-scheme variants of the GINN were piloted by prominent aces and figures including Rau Le Creuset, Miguel Aiman, Elijah Kiel, Gai Murakumo, Vhea, and Un No.
Trivia
Except for its internal frame design and core OS, the GINN was assembled using common global industrial components, making its structure simple enough for foreign nations to reverse-engineer. Furthermore, its handheld weaponry lacked electronic identification locks or safety codes, which frequently led to its weapons being captured and used by enemy units or opposing forces during combat.
