Overview

The MS-06 Zaku II is the flagship mass-produced mobile suit of the Principality of Zeon, featured prominently across the Universal Century timeline of the Mobile Suit Gundam franchise. Serving as the primary military backbone during the One Year War, it stands as one of the most recognized and iconic real-robot mecha in anime history. Built with an emphasis on tactical versatility and field adaptability, the Zaku II fundamentally reshaped mobile warfare, forcing the Earth Federation to develop its own counter-measures.

Appearance

The Zaku II stands 17.5 meters tall with a standard weight of 58.1 metric tons. Its design is distinguished by a rounded domed head featuring a glowing mono-eye camera and external power pipes routed around the head, waist, and legs. Standard mass-production models sport a dark green livery, featuring an L-shaped shield on the right shoulder and a three-spiked armor plate on the left. Specialized variants introduce cosmetic shifts, such as Dozle Zabi's unit adding gold engraving and four-spiked shoulder plates, or civilian-adjacent variants removing shoulder spikes entirely.

Personality

As a mass-produced war machine, the Zaku II is characterized by its rugged dependability, mechanical reliability, and ease of maintenance, earning the trust of everyday pilots on the battlefield. It is portrayed as the ultimate practical military workhorse rather than an exaggerated hero unit. In modern specialized depictions such as GUNDAM: Next Universal Century, specific automated units express distinct digital personalities through onboard artificial intelligence, such as the serious-minded Guro and the lighthearted Rizen.

Abilities

The Zaku II's primary arsenal consists of 105mm and 120mm Zaku machine guns, 280mm Zaku bazookas, and the Heat Hawk thermal axe for melee combat. Specialized configurations adapt heavy equipment like napalm launchers, giant warhammers, or adapted 680mm Zamel cannons. Designed with remarkable versatility, the machine is operable across space, atmospheric ground combat, submerged aquatic environments, and orbital colonies. Its modular component design facilitates easy field repairs, civilian modifications, and conversion into non-combat mobile workers.

Background

Developed to address the limitations of the earlier MS-05 Zaku I, the Zaku II entered early production as the NBC-ready C-type. Following the ratification of the Antarctic Treaty on January 31, U.C. 0079, which banned nuclear weapons, the suit was streamlined into the F-type by removing heavy radiation shielding. It quickly became the flagship engine of the Principality of Zeon's war effort during the One Year War. Long after the war's conclusion, captured units remained active within the Earth Federation, Neo Zeon factions, civilian enterprise networks as Mobile Workers, and even in future centuries as orbital debris removal units.

Relationships

The Zaku II shares deep combat ties with numerous pilots across factions. Within the Principality of Zeon, it was piloted by everyday frontline soldiers like Gene, as well as high-ranking figures and aces such as Dozle Zabi and Char Aznable in specialized custom units. Its overwhelming battlefield dominance directly prompted the Earth Federation to create the RX-78-2 Gundam as an effective counter-weapon. Decades later, ancient surviving chassis like the museum-kept Grandpa unit were repurposed by individuals such as Font Baud and Curtis Roscaux during critical escape missions.

Trivia

Designed by Kunio Okawara in the late 1970s, the Zaku II holds the real-world distinction of being the very first mecha to appear on screen in the original Mobile Suit Gundam anime broadcast. The Roman numeral II in its official designation historically presented technical formatting challenges on digital platforms due to platform-dependent character sets. In non-canonical or futuristic portrayals, such as the Osaka/Kansai Expo tie-in, Zaku units appear as autonomous debris-clearing machines working near the Yumeshima spaceport in the year A.D. 2150.
