Wing Gundam
The XXXG-01W Wing Gundam is the primary transformable mobile suit featured in the first half of the anime series Mobile Suit Gundam Wing. Developed by Doctor J at the L1 colony cluster based on design data from the original Wing Gundam Zero, it was dispatched to Earth as part of Operation Meteor. Known to the enemy organization OZ by the codename Gundam 01, the machine offers high combat versatility and superior long-range mobility via its transformable Bird Mode. While primarily operated by the protagonist Heero Yuy, the machine is also temporarily piloted by Trowa Barton and Lady Une.
Overview
Appearance
Standing at a total height of 16.3 meters and weighing 7.1 metric tons, the mobile suit is constructed with Gundanium alloy armor. Its physical structure incorporates samurai-inspired visual elements, including helmet sides resembling traditional kabuto fukikaeshi and circular shoulder accents shaped like kamon crests. The back features large wing thrusters, while the forearms house landing claws. Inside, it utilizes a spherical cockpit that rotates in sync with the head. A massive shield covers the forearms, ending in a sharp ramming point that forms the nosecone during transformation into Bird Mode, creating an avian silhouette.
Abilities
Equipped with back thrusters, the suit achieves hypersonic flight speed. Transforming into Bird Mode grants it long-range travel capabilities, single-unit atmospheric reentry, high-speed mid-air maneuvers, and the ability to serve as a sub-flight transport for allied units. Its primary firearm, the Buster Rifle, operates under a three-shot limit at maximum output via detachable cartridges, delivering strategic-level firepower capable of obliterating enemy formations or battleships. Its beam saber, stored within the shield, maintains full power underwater. Additional weaponry includes dual 5-barrel head vulcans and 6-barrel shoulder machine cannons, alongside a built-in self-destruct system inside the rear skirt.
Background
Constructed by Doctor J in the L1 colony cluster, the unit was deployed to Earth for Operation Meteor. Upon arrival, it fought Zechs Merquise's Leo and crashed into the sea. After being salvaged by Duo Maxwell, Heero Yuy attempted to sink it again with torpedoes to preserve secrecy. Returning to action, it was manipulated by Treize Khushrenada into accidentally destroying Marshal Noventa's shuttle, and was later self-destructed by Heero during a clash with Zechs. Rebuilt by Zechs in Antarctica, the suit changed hands across several conflicts before eventually being refitted with space boosters, whereupon Lady Une piloted it to shield Treize from the main cannon of the space fortress Libra.
Relationships
The machine was engineered by Doctor J based on simplified data from the Wing Gundam Zero. Its main pilot, Heero Yuy, viewed the unit as a tactical tool, initiating its self-destruction without hesitation to safeguard mission intelligence. Rival pilot Zechs Merquise engaged the unit during its Earth entry and later personally funded its full restoration in Antarctica for a rematch. Duo Maxwell salvaged the sunken suit intending to harvest it for parts, while Trowa Barton briefly piloted it during the Antarctic duel. Near the conclusion of the conflict, Lady Une piloted the unit to protect OZ commander Treize Khushrenada from enemy bombardment.
Trivia
Mechanic designer Kunio Okawara built the suit's visual concept around Japanese samurai motifs, contrasting with the European setting of the series. Its full official name Wing Gundam is spoken aloud only once in the entire animated television series—by Treize Khushrenada in Episode 46—with characters otherwise designating it as Gundam or 01. Among the five primary Gundams in the show, it is the only unit that never received a mid-season direct upgrade. The series' first opening sequence prominently featured the machine suffering heavy damage in battle. In Gundam Build Fighters, the suit serves as the base for Ricardo Fellini's custom Gunpla, the Wing Gundam Fenice.
