Fraw Bow

Overview

Fraw Bow is a major supporting character appearing in the anime series Mobile Suit Gundam and Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam. Originally a civilian residing on the space colony Side 7, she is a close childhood friend of protagonist Amuro Ray. Following an attack by the Principality of Zeon, she boards the Earth Federation warship White Base, where she transitions from a refugee assisting with medical duties and caring for war orphans into the ship's dedicated communications officer. Representing the ordinary humanity of the White Base crew, Fraw serves as an essential emotional anchor who looks after her companions throughout the devastation of the One Year War.

Appearance

Fraw Bow is depicted with short brown or orange hair accented by a hair ornament, along with brown eyes and noticeable freckles on her skin. Her attire includes a red dress as well as an Earth Federation military uniform paired with a yellow neckerchief.

Personality

Fraw Bow possesses a deeply caring, motherly, and attentive personality. Before the outbreak of war, she regularly took care of Amuro Ray, bringing him meals when he neglected his personal well-being due to his focus on mechanical work. Onboard the White Base, her nurturing disposition naturally led her to act as a protective older sister and maternal figure for the three young war orphans. While steadfastly supportive of her comrades, she harbors a delicate sensitivity, feeling a bittersweet loneliness as Amuro awakens as a Newtype and drifts beyond her reach.

Abilities

While Fraw Bow does not pilot mobile suits in the original animated work, she demonstrates strong utility in operational support roles aboard the White Base. She initially assists with the medical care and treatment of injured crew members. Following Sayla Mass's reassignment to piloting duties, Fraw takes full charge of the ship's communications system. During the ship's stay at Jaburo, her operational contributions are officially recognized when she receives a military commission as a Senior Private in the Earth Federation Forces.

Background

Fraw Bow originally lived peacefully on the space colony Side 7 until a Zeon surprise attack claimed the lives of her family. Forced to evacuate aboard the White Base, she looked after the war orphans Katz, Letz, and Kikka while serving as the ship's primary communications officer throughout the One Year War. As the war ended, her romantic connection with Amuro Ray drew to a close. During the peaceful era prior to Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam, she married her childhood friend Hayato Kobayashi, adopting the three orphans and changing her name to Fraw Kobayashi. She later became pregnant with Hayato's child, though she subsequently endured the tragic deaths of Katz during the Gryps Conflict and Hayato during the First Neo Zeon War.

Relationships

Fraw Bow maintains significant relationships with several White Base personnel. She was initially close to her childhood friend Amuro Ray, acting as a devoted caregiver, but grew emotionally distant as his Newtype abilities blossomed. She later married another childhood friend, Hayato Kobayashi, creating a family together. Fraw developed strong maternal bonds with the young war orphans Katz Howan, Letz Cofan, and Kikka Kitamoto, taking them under her care during the war and formally adopting them afterward. Professionally, she assumed communication duties from Sayla Mass and served under commander Bright Noa.

Trivia

Although Fraw Bow never pilots any mobile suits in the original animated series, the strategy game Gihren's Greed uniquely allows players to assign her as a mobile suit pilot. Furthermore, in the spin-off manga Mobile Suit Gundam Pulitzer, her biological child with Hayato Kobayashi is formally introduced, revealing that their biological offspring is a daughter who bears a striking physical resemblance to Fraw.
