Overview

The RX-75 Guntank is a long-range fire-support mobile suit developed by the Earth Federation Forces, debuting in Mobile Suit Gundam. Built under Project V as the Federation's earliest mobile suit, it features a unique design combining a humanoid upper torso with a tank-like lower body equipped with caterpillar tracks instead of bipedal legs.

Appearance

The machine features a humanoid upper body mounted directly onto a heavy tank chassis equipped with large caterpillar tracks. It possesses a dual-cockpit structure located in the head and torso sections with visible clear canopies. Instead of articulated hands, both arms serve as built-in missile launchers, and two long-barreled cannons are mounted on its shoulders.

Abilities

Its fixed armaments include two shoulder-mounted 120mm low-recoil cannons designed for extreme long-range bombardment and dual arm-integrated 40mm 4-barrel bop missile launchers for anti-air and suppression. It incorporates the Core Block System and bottom thrusters allowing orbital movement, though it lacks melee combat capabilities and high mobility.

Background

Adapted from the RTX-44 armored vehicle, the Guntank was finalized under Project V. When Zeon forces attacked Side 7, only one of the three prototype units survived and was assigned to the assault carrier White Base. Originally operated as a two-seater by Ryu Jose and Hayato Kobayashi, it was later reconfigured for single-pilot operation after Ryu's death.

Relationships

Hayato Kobayashi served as the main gunner and later solo pilot onboard the White Base, while Ryu Jose initially acted as the driver. The unit operates alongside the RX-78-2 Gundam and RX-77-2 Guncannon as part of the Federation's Project V mobile suit team.

Trivia

Designed by Kunio Okawara, the machine is widely remembered for its specialized long-range role and complete vulnerability in close quarters. In the theatrical compilation movie trilogy, it was left behind at Jaburo and substituted by a second Guncannon for the space campaign.
