Overview
The Re-GZ (model number: RGZ-91) is a prototype mobile suit appearing in the anime film Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack. Developed by Anaheim Electronics to mass-produce the MSZ-006 Zeta Gundam, its name stands for Refined Gundam Zeta. Allocated to the Earth Federation's Londo Bell fleet, it served as a transitional unit during the Second Neo Zeon War.
Appearance
The Re-GZ features a blue-gray color scheme and is modeled after the Zeta Gundam's general frame. Its head is equipped with a long rod-shaped antenna, and its visual sensors glow blue.
Abilities
By omitting the complex transformation mechanism except for the legs, the frame gained higher reliability and structural rigidity while lowering production cost. Equipping the optional Back Weapon System (BWS) allows operation in Space Fighter mode with high firepower, including a large-caliber beam cannon, beam cannons, and missile launchers. Moving to MS mode requires purging the BWS. Internal weaponry includes twin 60mm head vulcans, beam sabers, and 2-barrel grenade launchers on the forearms and side armor. It also carries a dedicated beam rifle using an advanced E-pack and a large shield housing hand grenades.
Background
During the Second Neo Zeon War, Amuro Ray initially piloted the Re-GZ into battle, demonstrating its high capabilities during engagements at 5th Luna before transitioning to the Nu Gundam. The unit was subsequently reassigned to Kayra Su, who was killed in action during a fight with Gyunei Guss's Jagd Doga. Later in the conflict, despite the machine being partially repaired, Chan Agi sortied in it to deliver the psycho-frame, destroying the Alpha Azieru before the Re-GZ was ultimately destroyed by Hathaway Noa's Jegan.
Relationships
Amuro Ray acted as the initial test pilot and main combatant in the Re-GZ. After Amuro acquired the Nu Gundam, Kayra Su took over as its primary pilot, while Chan Agi later operated the damaged suit during the final combat phase. In the novelization Beltorchika's Children, Beltorchika Irma pilots the unit instead.
Trivia
In the film, Gyunei Guss famously derided the unit as a fake Gundam. Another unit with a different color scheme appears stored aboard the Ra Cailum in Mobile Suit Gundam UC. Tactical data collected from the Re-GZ eventually contributed to the development of the mass-production transformable ReZEL.
