Overview
The CONCEPT-X6-1-2 Turn X is a mobile suit appearing in the anime series Turn A Gundam, acting as the narrative's primary antagonist unit. Piloted by Gym Ghingham of the Ghingham Fleet, it is characterized as the "older brother" or monitoring machine to the Turn A Gundam. Excavated from a Mountain Cycle on the Moon, it harbors mysterious origins possibly linked to technology from outside the solar system and stores extensive data regarding the ancient Dark History.
Appearance
Standing 20.5 meters tall with a mass of 50.6 metric tons, the Turn X has an asymmetrical build featuring yellow eyes and a V-fin. Its most prominent physical trait is a large, unhealable X-shaped scar etched into its chest armor. Its right hand is replaced by a massive clawed assembly called the Destruction Manipulator, while its back carries a specialized weapon platform known as the Carapace.
Personality
As a machine, the Turn X has no character of its own. However, when brought into close proximity with the Turn A Gundam, it exhibits unique resonance behaviors, displaying turn-type emblems on its cockpit monitors, causing its optics and forehead symbols to glow, and emitting distinct ringing sounds.
Abilities
The suit utilizes an I-field beam drive that creates an impervious barrier against optical weaponry. Its right arm houses a Destruction Manipulator capable of generating a high-output beam saber—registered under the system name "Shining Finger"—as well as firing wire claws and a 3-barrel beam projection system. The unit can separate its body into up to ten distinct components to execute the "Bloody Siege" all-range attack using built-in rephaser cannons. It carries the Carapace platform housing rifles and rocket launchers, and can deploy the green-hued nanomachine superweapon known as the Moonlight Butterfly.
Background
According to ancient lore, the Turn X drifted into the solar system from outer space, prompting humanity to develop the Turn A Gundam based on its technology. During the catastrophic final war of the Dark History, the conflict ended when the units wiped out global civilization. The Turn X was subsequently buried within a lunar Mountain Cycle for millennia until its excavation by the Ghingham Fleet. In the final conflict of the era, it engaged the Turn A Gundam piloted by Loran Cehack, culminating in a mutual double-knockout that entombed both machines inside a cocoon of nanomachines.
Relationships
Piloted by Gym Ghingham, the suit is affectionately addressed by him as the "older brother" of the Turn A Gundam. It shares a deep historical rivalry with the Turn A Gundam, piloted by Loran Cehack. Over the course of the conflict, the Turn X opposes the forces of Dianna Sorell and the Earth Militia, briefly cooperating with the Turn A during the Mistletoe crisis before facing it in a fatal dual encounter.
Trivia
The mechanical design of the Turn X was created by renowned American visual futurist Syd Mead. Its model number, CONCEPT-X6-1-2, stands for Project-6 Division-1 Block-2. The "X" in its name refers to a hypothetical 10th planet of the solar system, serving as a narrative hook for origins beyond known space. Its detachable head unit, the X-Top, doubles as the control interface for the Kailas Giri orbital satellite cannon.
