Overview
Leina Ashta is a supporting character in the anime series Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ. She is the younger sister of the protagonist Judau Ashta and boards the Argama alongside him. Despite finding herself drawn into the turmoil of war, she demonstrates strong resolve and serves as a key emotional pillar for her brother.
Appearance
Leina features green eyes and short brown hair adorned with a ribbon or bow accessory, along with a distinct ahoge on top of her head. In addition to her standard casual clothing, she is seen wearing elegant dresses during her period of captivity.
Personality
In contrast to her brother Judau, Leina is a highly responsible honor student who worries over his tendency to skip school for his junk collector work. She encourages him to join the Argama crew to seek a better life away from their impoverished colony. Even under extreme danger, she demonstrates remarkable courage and stays calm, often taking initiative to handle chaotic situations with dignity.
Abilities
Although not a trained military pilot, Leina shows decisiveness by boarding a Core Base to assist her brother during a critical situation. Furthermore, she exhibits Newtype sensitivity, such as picking up on the ugly thoughts and emotions of political figures during a formal event in Dakar.
Background
Leina originally lived with her brother in the Shangri-La colony on Side 1 before boarding the Argama. During a battle, she was captured by Neo Zeon's Glemy Toto, who subjected her to strict etiquette training. She survived a shooting in Dakar and a subsequent explosion that left her presumed dead by her allies. In reality, she was secretly rescued by Sayla Mass and eventually reunited with Judau right before his departure for Jupiter.
Relationships
Leina is doted on by her older brother, Judau Ashta. She forms bonds with the crew members of the Argama, including Roux Louka, Elle Vianno, Beecha Oleg, Mond Agake, and Iino Abbav. While she was held captive by Glemy Toto, she was also nursed by Elpeo Ple, whom she initially mistrusted due to Ple's nature as a Cyber-Commu user. Following her survival, she was cared for by Sayla Mass.
Trivia
The original voice acting role for Leina in the anime series was assigned directly by the production staff rather than through an audition process, selecting Maya Okamoto, who had previously voiced Emma Sheen in Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam.
