Union Flag
The SVMS-01 Union Flag is a mass-produced transformable mobile suit featured in Mobile Suit Gundam 00. Serving as the flagship unit of the Solresived Variable series developed under chief designer Professor Ralph Eifman, it was created as the successor to the Union Realdo for the Union of Solar Energy and Free Nations. Unlike its predecessor, the Flag can seamlessly switch between mobile suit and flight modes during combat missions. Primarily assigned to elite military units, it represents the pinnacle of conventional non-GN mobile suit engineering at the start of the series.
Overview
Appearance
Standing 17.9 meters tall with a mass of 67.1 metric tons, the Union Flag features an extremely slim silhouette constructed around a carbon frame. Its head features an orange visor-style optical camera, while its back is equipped with main and secondary flight wings. The forearms are hollowed out internally to store melee weaponry, and the left forearm holds a prominent rotating defense rod. An auxiliary machine gun is integrated into the left side of the abdominal drum frame, while the legs and underwings house internal and external missile hardpoints.
Abilities
Powered by a battery system, the Flag relies on four hydrogen plasma jet engines for atmospheric flight, drawing fuel stored at a molecular level directly within its carbon frame. The frame can detach into upper and lower units, with a backup cockpit built into the waist. Its primary armament is a 120mm linear rifle capable of single-shot high-power fire and rapid-fire modes, supplemented by forearm-stored sonic blades that project plasma edges, an abdominal 20mm machine gun, internal and external missiles, and a rotating defense rod that uses plasma fields and kinetic deflection. Mid-air transformation is officially unsupported due to structural stress, yet elite pilots can successfully perform in-flight mode changes.
Background
Introduced around A.D. 2307, the Union Flag was initially supplied to elite operational units, earning its pilots the respected title of Flag Fighters. When the mysterious Celestial Being intervened in world affairs, the Flag's conventional armaments struggled to damage the Gundams' GN fields. Following the rapid proliferation of GN Drive-equipped mobile suits, production was discontinued prior to full-scale deployment, making remaining units rare commodities used by both the Earth Sphere Federation Peacekeeping Forces and the resistance group Katharon. Various adaptations were constructed, including the space-use Orbit Package and the heavily armored Shell Flag, and the machine served as the architectural basis for specialized successors such as the Over Flag, GN Flag, Susanowo, and Brave.
Relationships
The machine was engineered by Professor Ralph Eifman, who established its lightweight carbon architecture. Lieutenant Graham Aker emerged as its most famous pilot, pushing the machine past its design limits and pioneering the acrobatic mid-air transformation maneuver known as the Graham Special. Fellow pilots Howard Mason and Daryl Dodge also served as Flag Fighters under Graham's command. Additionally, Union engineer Billy Katagiri played a central role in customizing and evolving the Flag frame into advanced successor units.
Trivia
When mecha designer Hitoshi Fukuchi first unveiled the slim proportions of the Union Flag, he was questioned on whether a physical model of the machine could balance upright without a support stand. In response, Fukuchi produced a scratch-built mock-up he had prepared in advance to demonstrate its self-standing capability. In commercial releases, the machine was rendered in the High Grade 1/144 plastic model line; because its structural frame and joint components utilize ABS plastic, builders are advised to handle paint application carefully to prevent material brittleness.
