Overview
The Neue Ziel (model number AMX-002, also designated AMA-X2 or AMA-002) is a massive prototype mobile armor featured in Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory. Originally developed by the Zeon remnant faction Axis and transferred to the Delaz Fleet, the machine is piloted by the legendary ace Anavel Gato during the climax of the Delaz Conflict. Designed as an imposing one-off unit packed with heavy firepower and advanced defense systems, it serves as the ultimate symbol of Zeon's martial spirit in the final space battles of the OVA.
Appearance
The Neue Ziel is a colossal mobile armor measuring 76.6 meters in total height and 73.6 meters in overall width. Its visual structure is modeled after a swallowtail butterfly with outstretched wings, featuring massive shoulder armor serving as forewings and large propellant tanks on both sides of the abdominal area acting as hindwings. Taken as a whole, its distinctive silhouette closely mirrors the national emblem of the Principality of Zeon.
Abilities
The machine wields immense firepower, centered around a high-output Mega Cannon directly wired to its generator, nine deflectable mega particle cannons capable of rapid fire, and six standard mega particle cannons. For missile warfare, it carries four large missile launchers and twenty-four small missile launchers. Defensively, four I-field generators form an impenetrable barrier against heavy beam weaponry. For melee engagement, it is equipped with four hidden sub-arms capable of generating beam sabers, alongside two wired claw arms that enable all-range attacks via wire guidance for non-Newtype pilots. Despite its size, multiple powerful thrusters grant high mobility and extended operational endurance.
Background
Originally conceived during the One Year War, the Neue Ziel was eventually constructed by Axis using asteroid belt resources and advanced technology. It was gifted to the Delaz Fleet to support Operation Stardust and assigned to Anavel Gato following the loss of Gundam Development Project Unit 2. Sent to protect a falling space colony bound for Earth, Gato engaged in a grueling duel against Kou Uraki in the Gundam Unit 3 Dendrobium. Despite the betrayal of Cima Garahau resulting in Aiguille Delaz's death, and severe damage inflicted by Bask Om's Solar System II, Gato successfully ensured the colony crossed the point of no return. To cover the retreat of surviving allies, he single-handedly decimated multiple Earth Federation vessels before destroying the machine in a suicidal ramming attack against a Salamis-custom class cruiser.
Relationships
Anavel Gato served as the primary pilot of the Neue Ziel, praising the machine as the embodiment of Zeon's spirit and skillfully overcoming the high physical and mental strain required to control it. The unit was provided to the Delaz Fleet by Axis under Aiguille Delaz's command. On the battlefield, Gato engaged in a violent duel with key adversary Kou Uraki, who piloted the Gundam Development Project Unit 3 Dendrobium. Following the betrayal of Cima Garahau, who assassinated Delaz aboard the flagship Gwaden, Gato retaliated by destroying the vessel's bridge before confronting the Earth Federation forces commanded by Bask Om.
Trivia
The name "Neue Ziel" translates from German as "New Goal" (NEUES ZIEL), with some setting references interpreting it as "New Era." It carries multiple model designations, including AMX-002, AMA-002, and AMA-X2. The aesthetic layout was directly inspired by the shape of a swallowtail butterfly and the national emblem of Zeon. Its quasi-psycommu wire-guided claw system represents a technological leap over the earlier Zeong by allowing a single non-Newtype pilot to execute all-range attacks. In real-world merchandise, the machine was released as a 1/550 scale HG Mechanics model kit and in the BB Senshi series, alongside recurring appearances in video games such as the Super Robot Wars and SD Gundam franchises.
