Saviour Gundam
The Saviour Gundam (ZGMF-X23S) is a prototype transformable Mobile Suit featured in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED DESTINY. Manufactured by ZAFT as part of its Second Stage Series, the machine was assigned to Athrun Zala upon his re-enlistment and serving under FAITH authority, operating as a core unit aboard the battleship Minerva. Designed with an emphasis on aerial combat, it incorporates a transformation mechanism into a high-speed fighter-style Mobile Armor mode. Leveraging top-tier mobility and heavy firepower for hit-and-run strikes, it was ultimately rendered completely combat-ineffective during an encounter with Kira Yamato's Freedom Gundam off the coast of Crete.

Leveraging top-tier mobility and heavy firepower for hit-and-run strikes, it was ultimately rendered completely combat-ineffective during an encounter with Kira Yamato's Freedom Gundam off the coast of Crete.
Appearance
The Saviour Gundam features a deep red Variable Phase Shift armor scheme and green eyes, distinguished by a V-fin antenna and a prominent crest sensor on its head reminiscent of the Justice Gundam. It possesses pair of mechanical wing-like binders mounted on its back that hold its primary artillery devices and nose section assembly. The suit carries a streamlined aerodynamic shield on its left forearm and retains saber storage sockets inside both shoulder armors.
Abilities
The suit transforms into a dual-hull fighter Mobile Armor mode, delivering top-tier aerial maneuverability across both space and atmospheric environments. Powered by a battery compatible with the Deuterion Beam Energy Supply System and protected by VPS armor, its heavy armaments include two back-mounted M106 Amfortas Plasma Beam Cannons paired with MA-7B Super Fortis Beam Cannons. Its standard equipment comprises an MA-BAR70 High-Energy Beam Rifle, twin MA-M941 Vajra Beam Sabers, head and nose CIWS/Picus close-in guns, and an MMI-RD11 Aerodynamic Shield that functions as a ventral control fin in flight mode.
Background
Conceived alongside the Impulse Gundam following the Junius Treaty, the Saviour Gundam was developed using test data gathered from the earlier Proto Saviour. Because it was still undergoing completion at Aprilius during the Armory One incident, it avoided being stolen by Phantom Pain. Entrusted to Athrun Zala, the mobile suit saw action in operations across the Indian Ocean, Gulnahan, and the Dardanelles. However, during a chaotic battle in the waters off Crete, it was completely dismembered by the Freedom Gundam. Its ruined chassis was recovered by the Minerva and later disposed of.
Relationships
The machine was piloted by Athrun Zala during his tenure in ZAFT's FAITH division. As part of the Minerva's mobile suit complement, it fought in tandem with Shinn Asuka's Impulse Gundam, Rey Za Burrel's Zaku Phantom, and Lunamaria Hawke's Zaku Warrior. Its primary adversaries included the Phantom Pain unit led by Neo Roanoke and Sting Oakley's Chaos Gundam. In its final combat engagement, it was systematically dismantled by Kira Yamato while operating the Freedom Gundam.
Trivia
The machine's name uses the English word 'Saviour' (meaning redeemer or savior) for its official spelling. Among Athrun Zala's primary dedicated Mobile Suits throughout the franchise, the Saviour Gundam uniquely lacks a Master Grade (MG) plastic model kit or ROBOT Spirits action figure release. Expanded material such as Mobile Suit Gundam SEED RECOLLECTION notes that Athrun previously demonstrated mastery over similar transformable atmospheric test craft like the Murasame.
