Overview

The AMX-009 Dreissen is a general-purpose mass-production mobile suit developed by Neo Zeon (Axis), debuting in Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ and later appearing in Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn. Serving as the ultimate evolution of the One Year War's classic Dom lineage, it was produced by Hecta Dona Corp. Combining high armor durability with exceptional mobility, the unit specializes in close-to-mid-range combat. It became a core main force during the First Neo Zeon War and remained in service with the Neo Zeon remnants known as the Sleeves.

Appearance

The Dreissen features a heavy armor design inheriting the visual traits of the Dom series, equipped with a single mono-eye utilizing a modified cross-shaped sensor track. Constructed with a rigid fixed frame and gundarium alloy armor, the body mounts 16 attitude control verniers across the shoulders, side skirt armor, and legs. Large thermonuclear thrusters are built into its back, inner legs, and waist skirts. Models operated by the Sleeves faction feature distinct decorative sleeve and chest engravings.

Abilities

Built on a rigid frame with lightweight gundarium alloy, the Dreissen balances high armor durability with intense agility. Its powerful thrusters and 16 attitude control verniers allow space mobility matching variable mobile suits, alongside hover-movement capability on land. It features built-in 3-barrel beam cannons (2.8 MW) in both forearms. For melee, it wields a Beam Lancer (1.7 MW) and a Beam Tomahawk (0.92 MW), which can combine into a higher-output weapon. Its back mounts Tri-Blades, autonomous rotating throw weapons guided by heat and Minovsky sensors. It exhibits broad versatility, capable of equipping Beam Rifles, Beam Bazookas, Giant Bazookas, and Heat Sabers.

Background

Following the Gryps War, Axis Neo Zeon initiated the development of the AMX-009 as a main-force candidate for Earth invasion operations. Grounded in the design concepts of the Rick Dom II, engineers refined it into a high-speed, general-purpose suit. Though originally planned for ultra-high-output long-range gear, it was finalized as a close-quarters unit with excellent mobility, proving effective at Dublin and the Ergolea Base. Numerous units saw action during Gremmy Toto's rebellion. Although mass-production plans stalled after the war, surviving units were integrated into the Sleeves and fought during the Laplace Incident in U.C. 0096 with weapon loadout adjustments.

Relationships

During the First Neo Zeon War, the Dreissen was piloted by notable commanders and aces including Rakan Dahkaran, August Gidan, and Gremmy Toto, while Burn Fixes operated a prototype-equipped unit. Tactically, it formed effective assault combinations when covered by the long-range fire of the AMX-102 Zssa. Under the Sleeves remnant faction, pilots such as Zamu Samu and Tellus Lloyd commanded these units in later conflicts.

Trivia

The Dreissen's mechanical framework later influenced Mars Zeon's RF Dom and the Dom III variant. Its traditional cockpit design was particularly well-received by One Year War veteran pilots. In model kits, a 1/144 scale kit was released during the original airing of Gundam ZZ, followed by HGUC releases for both the Sleeves and original ZZ versions. It also frequently appears as an enemy or obtainable unit across the Super Robot Wars video game series.
