Overview
A prominent mobile suit featured in Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team and other works within the mecha franchise. Designed by the Principality of Zeon, this unit is a major redesign of the original Gouf, replacing fixed built-in armaments with versatile weaponry to drastically improve mid-range firepower and combat flexibility.
Appearance
The machine features a single horn antenna, a mono-eye sensor set inside a narrowed eye rail, and a shortened neck duct. Spikes adorn both shoulders, while the side blocks of the lower chest flare outward. Its legs incorporate double-jointed knees alongside squared thigh armor, and its backpack has thruster nozzles embedded into split lower sections.
Abilities
Equipped with a detachable 6-barrel 75mm Gatling shield that stows a physical heat saber beneath its frame, the suit also mounts a forearm-mounted 3-barrel 35mm Gatling gun capable of field magazine reloading. Its whip is updated to a wire-type heat rod extending up to 17.5 meters, using a hooked anchor tip for electric discharges and high-angle grapple maneuvering. Heavy armaments can be jettisoned in close quarters, and the suit is capable of low-altitude hovering.
Background
During Zeon's invasion of Earth, the initial Gouf's dedicated hand-to-hand focus proved inflexible in dynamic combat, prompting Zeon engineers to redesign it as the MS-07B-3 with modular armament options. In the Southeast Asian theater, Commander Norris Packard piloted the unit during the defense of the Apsalus base, engaging Federal forces single-handedly to clear a retreat route for a hospital ship and obliterating three mass-produced Guntanks. Units of this type were also deployed in other conflict zones, including battles shown in MS IGLOO 2 and Requiem for Vengeance.
Relationships
Commander Norris Packard famously piloted the unit in battle against Shiro Amada and the 08th MS Team while defending the Apsalus facility. Norris held off Shiro's Gundam Ez8 and supporting Gundam Ground Types long enough to destroy the designated Guntank squad. Other Zeon pilots known to operate this mobile suit or its modified variants include Lieutenant Commander Lance Garfield, Captain Naransolongo Boldbatar, and Iria Solari.
Trivia
Designed by Hajime Katoki, the unit was originally listed in anime credits as 'MS-07B3 Gouf', with the name 'Gouf Custom' becoming standard following the release of its 1/144 scale plastic model kit. In spin-off media, derivative versions appear with distinct custom color schemes such as white or black, as well as unique close-combat gear and dual-wielding setups.
