Barzam

The RMS-154 Barzam is a general-purpose mass-produced mobile suit featured in Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam. Developed by the Earth Federation's elite Titans force at the New Guinea Base during the Gryps Conflict, it was designed as a cost-effective alternative to relying on Anaheim Electronics. Utilizing simplified structural elements derived from the Gundam Mk-II, the Barzam became the Titans' final mass-produced mobile suit of the war, providing dependable combat capabilities for standard pilots.

Overview

The RMS-154 Barzam is a general-purpose mass-produced mobile suit featured in Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam. Developed by the Earth Federation's elite Titans force at the New Guinea Base during the Gryps Conflict, it was designed as a cost-effective alternative to relying on Anaheim Electronics. Utilizing simplified structural elements derived from the Gundam Mk-II, the Barzam became the Titans' final mass-produced mobile suit of the war, providing dependable combat capabilities for standard pilots.

Appearance

The Barzam features a head design distinguished by a large, raptor-wing-shaped crest blade antenna and a prominent mono-eye sensor. Its torso lacks traditional waist skirt armor, leaving the area streamlined while the thighs are reinforced with heavy armor plating. An energy connector socket is integrated into the crotch joint section. Its forearms house melee weapons, while its dedicated beam rifle includes a prominent power cable extending to connect with the shoulder armor.

Abilities

Constructed with Gundarium alloy armor and a simplified Gundam Mk-II structural frame, the Barzam exhibits high weapon compatibility. It incorporates a detachable head-mounted 60mm vulcan pod system and two forearm-stored beam sabers. Its primary beam rifle uses an open-barrel design powered via a shoulder connection cable and is held in a reverse grip to double as an emergency guard. Additionally, it can mount a break-action grenade launcher and utilize standard Earth Federation equipment, including beam rifles, hyper bazookas, shields, and mega launchers from other mobile suits. The crotch joint socket supports power supply to sub-flight systems or replacement with vernier units.

Background

During the Gryps Conflict, the Titans faced a shortage of standard mass-production machines for general pilots while their next-generation TR Plan was delayed. To secure an independent supply line free from Anaheim Electronics, engineers at the New Guinea Base revived the halted mass-production project of the Gundam Mk-II, resulting in the Barzam. It first entered combat in episode 35 of the animated series under Yazan Gable's tactical team, serving as the final mass-produced machine fielded by the Titans before the war's conclusion. After the conflict, remaining units were integrated into the Earth Federation Forces, with many later refitted into the Bar-GM to distance them from the Titans' reputation.

Relationships

Developed for the Titans and the Earth Federation Forces, the Barzam was built internally to break reliance on Anaheim Electronics. Its internal framework directly inherits and simplifies the structural engineering of the Gundam Mk-II. On the battlefield, units were assigned to operate under the command of Yazan Gable during key operations in the Gryps Conflict. Following the downfall of the Titans, surplus units were inherited by the Earth Federation Forces and served as the direct basis for the re-engineered Bar-GM variant.

Trivia

The Barzam has inspired numerous redesigned variations across side-story media by well-known mechanical designers. Kazuhisa Kondo depicted a version featuring dual eyes and a Gundam-like face, Hajime Katoki designed the Refined Barzam (Barzam Kai) for Gundam Sentinel, and Kenki Fujioka created specialized variants integrating drum frames and modular equipment for the A.O.Z series. Within universe lore, such as Monthly Mobile Machine, its precise development background is described as clouded by contradictory reports due to the Earth Federation's secrecy. Additionally, the Martian Re-Gion faction operates customized red-and-white captured units equipped with hover equipment.
