Gaplant

The ORX-005 Gaplant is a prototype transformable mobile armor introduced in Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam. Developed by the Oakland Research Institute based on initial designs from the Augusta Research Institute, it was created for the Titans as an ultra-high-altitude atmospheric interceptor. Operating primarily in mobile armor mode, the unit utilizes concentrated thermonuclear thrusters to achieve high-speed hit-and-run strikes. Despite high fuel consumption and intense acceleration forces, its extreme speed and transformation capability made it a formidable threat during the Gryps Conflict.

Overview

Appearance

The Gaplant features a single mono-eye sensor, typically glowing pink, though some modified variants display a green sensor light. Its most prominent visual characteristic is the pair of large movable shield binders mounted on both arms, integrating armor, weaponry, and propulsion units. Depending on the operator or specific machine, its color scheme ranges from standard roll-out green to custom red-and-black paint jobs with personal emblems. When configured for atmospheric departure, a massive auxiliary booster is attached to the rear.

Abilities

The machine can freely transform between mobile armor and mobile suit modes. Its twin movable shield binders function simultaneously as beam-coated shields, direct-generator-connected beam rifles with high fire power, and thrust-vectoring nozzles, enabling sharp course changes and explosive acceleration. For close combat, it carries two beam sabers stowed within its side armor. Additionally, equipping a massive auxiliary booster with 60,600 kg of thrust grants the unit atmospheric escape capabilities and allows it to serve as a sub-flight system transporting other machines.

Background

Deployed by the Titans during the Gryps Conflict, the Gaplant initially imposed violent G-forces that restricted its operation to Cyber-Newtypes, leading to its debut under the control of Rosamia Badam. Subsequent refinements allowed later production models to be handled by normal pilots, notably being mastered by ace pilot Yazan Gable. Due to its exceptional performance, surviving and reconstructed units remained in service for decades; during Universal Century 0105, the anti-Federation organization Mafty restored an abandoned unit for orbital transport operations, and its wreckage was still seen as late as U.C. 0203.

Relationships

The Gaplant was piloted by notable aces including Cyber-Newtype Rosamia Badam and Titans officer Yazan Gable, as well as Erisia Nocton and Ingrid 0 in peripheral works. Its innovative movable binder concept was directly inherited by the Anksha and influenced machines like the Gundam Mk-III Harpyuleia. Furthermore, rival factions adapted its structural principles to develop units such as the Metuss X-2 and Gaza-W, while its heavy booster was repurposed for machines like the Gundam TR-1 [Hazel-Rah].

Trivia

Designated as ORX-005 (or CRX-005 in certain records), the unit was preceded by an early flight prototype named the ORX-003 Domingo. Over the years, numerous variants have appeared across side stories and spin-offs, including the Gundam-headed Gaplant TR-5 [Hrairoo], the Advanced Gaplant, and the Sturm Jäger. The machine has also been featured as a playable unit in various crossover video games.
