Overview
Athrun Zala is a central character and deuteragonist in the Mobile Suit Gundam SEED franchise. As a second-generation Coordinator and the son of former PLANT Supreme Council Chairman Patrick Zala, he begins his military service as an elite pilot in ZAFT. Throughout the wars between the colonies and Earth, Athrun constantly struggles to define his own identity and path toward lasting peace.
Appearance
Athrun is a handsome young man taking after his mother, featuring dark blue medium-length hair parted in the front and green eyes. His personal color is red, reflected in the elite red ZAFT military uniform he wears, which consists of a jacket, shirt, pants, and gloves. During the events of Mobile Suit Gundam SEED DESTINY, he is also seen wearing a purple pilot suit.
Personality
Athrun is serious, earnest, and deeply dutiful, maintaining a strong sense of personal discipline. Despite his composed demeanor, he can be socially awkward and oblivious when dealing with personal relationships and romance. He possesses a subtle competitive streak among peers. While he struggles between military obedience and his own moral judgment, he ultimately acts upon his personal convictions to protect others.
Abilities
Athrun graduated overall top of his class from the ZAFT Military Academy, ranking first in mobile suit combat, knife fighting, and information processing. He possesses remarkable spatial awareness and the SEED factor, displaying high skill in both firearms and hand-to-hand combat. In mobile suit warfare, he excels at aggressive close-quarters combat using dual-bladed beam sabers and flight lifter equipment. He is also an effective tactical commander and an adept electronics engineer.
Background
Athrun spent part of his youth on the Moon, where he formed a close friendship with Kira Yamato. After losing his mother in the Bloody Valentine incident, he enlisted in ZAFT and joined the attack on Heliopolis to hijack Earth Alliance prototype mobile suits. Following intense clashes with Kira, he received the Justice Gundam but ultimately defected after opposing his father's extremist genocide campaign. He joined the Three Ships Alliance to stop the war. He later served in Orb under the alias Alex Dino before briefly rejoining ZAFT, eventually escaping again to join the Ark Angel crew in the final battles.
Relationships
Kira Yamato is Athrun's childhood best friend; despite being pitted against each other in war, their friendship remains unbreakable. Cagalli Yula Athha is his romantic partner, whom he met during the war and later served as her personal bodyguard. Lacus Clyne was his former arranged fiancée; after the annulment of their political agreement, they remained supportive allies. His father, Patrick Zala, became an ideological opponent due to his genocidal stance against Naturals. Athrun also served as a superior officer to Shinn Asuka, with whom he eventually reconciled.
Trivia
The name Athrun connects to terms meaning 'soldier' in Greek and 'dawn' in Hebrew, while Zala relates to meanings of 'lion.' His primary hobby is electronic engineering, leading him to construct the mechanical bird Torii for Kira Yamato and multiple Haro units for Lacus Clyne. Conversely, he admits to being poor at drawing and singing. His favorite foods are cabbage rolls and peaches, whereas he dislikes salmon roe and bluefish.
