Gundam Epyon

The OZ-13MS Gundam Epyon is a mobile suit featured in Mobile Suit Gundam W. Secretly constructed by Treize Khushrenada while confined by the Romefeller Foundation, it was developed using captured Gundam data. Reflecting Treize's chivalric personal philosophy, the unit omits all ranged firearms in favor of pure close-quarters battle. Initially entrusted to Heero Yuy, it was later exchanged with Zechs Merquise (Milliardo Peacecraft), who piloted it as a primary rival to the Wing Gundam Zero.

Overview

The OZ-13MS Gundam Epyon is a mobile suit featured in Mobile Suit Gundam W. Secretly constructed by Treize Khushrenada while confined by the Romefeller Foundation, it was developed using captured Gundam data. Reflecting Treize's chivalric personal philosophy, the unit omits all ranged firearms in favor of pure close-quarters battle. Initially entrusted to Heero Yuy, it was later exchanged with Zechs Merquise (Milliardo Peacecraft), who piloted it as a primary rival to the Wing Gundam Zero.

Appearance

The Gundam Epyon features a demonic or dragon-like aesthetic colored mainly in red, complete with a prominent twin-eyed head, a V-fin antenna, and back-mounted wings. On its left arm, it mounts a compact shield with integrated claw mechanisms, while a heavy beam sword connects by wire to its right side skirt. When transformed into its mobile armor flight mode, the lower legs fold forward to form a twin-headed dragon silhouette, using its heat rod as a tail. Its pilot operates the unit using a specialized data helmet.

Personality

The Epyon reflects Treize Khushrenada's philosophical opposition to utilitarian rule and cold efficiency, built not to seek outright victory but to allow a warrior to fight for their beliefs continuously. It acts as a medium that forces its user to recognize their true enemy. In line with Treize's view of knightly honor, the machine lacks any self-destruction mechanism.

Abilities

Boasting mobility and close-combat proficiency superior to the Wing Gundam Zero, the Epyon executes high-speed maneuvers beyond standard pilot reaction times. Its beam sword directly taps the unit's generator via a hardwired cable, generating enough thermal output to slice the space fortress Bulge in two. Its shield houses a superheated segment rod capable of melting targets upon contact. Inside the cockpit, the suit runs the Epyon System—an interface similar to the ZERO System that feeds tactical predictions to the pilot while placing severe mental strain on their cognitive stability.

Background

Built in absolute secrecy in Luxembourg using acquired Gundam technical data, the unit was initially handed over to Heero Yuy by Treize Khushrenada. After Heero suffered severe psychological stress under the Epyon System, he dueled Zechs Merquise in the Wing Gundam Zero, resulting in both pilots swapping their respective machines. As Zechs assumed leadership of White Fang, he piloted the Epyon in critical space engagements, including the destruction of the fortress Bulge. In the final battle aboard the collapsing space battleship Libra, it engaged Heero's Wing Zero in a duel that ended with its arm severed, after which Zechs used the suit to destroy Libra's engine block before vanishing in the explosion.

Relationships

The machine was created by Treize Khushrenada as an embodiment of his military ideals. Heero Yuy was its first pilot, but finding its operating system incompatible with his purpose, he surrendered it to Zechs Merquise (Milliardo Peacecraft). Recognizing Treize's intent behind the suit, Zechs adopted it as his personal craft and ultimately clashed with Heero, who was piloting the Wing Gundam Zero.

Trivia

The name Epyon is derived from a Greek term meaning 'next' or 'next generation'. For the manga series Mobile Suit Gundam Wing Endless Waltz: The Glory of Losers, designer Hajime Katoki updated the mechanical details, adding a retractable function to its heat rod. The mobile suit also makes frequent appearances in fighting games and cross-over video game franchises.
