Overview
The MS-09F/TROP Dom Tropen is a heavy mobile suit operated by the Principality of Zeon, appearing in works such as Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory and Mobile Suit Gundam UC. Redesigned from the base MS-09 Dom series using combat data from ground units, it was tailored specifically for localized warfare in harsh desert and tropical environments.
Appearance
The Dom Tropen features a bulky mobile suit silhouette with a single mono-eye sensor visor. Its chest structure retains design elements for a beam cannon, while the lower leg units are equipped with intake ports fitted with sand dust filters. Visually, the unit appears in standard tropical deployment colors as well as a sand brown camouflage scheme.
Abilities
Enhanced leg hover thrusters and dust filters allow the unit to maintain high mobility across soft sand and tropical terrain. Its combat capabilities are supported by a heavy arsenal including an 880mm Raketen Bazooka, an MMP-80 90mm machine gun, Sturm Fausts, and a heat saber capable of cleaving enemy mobile suits in two. Certain units also utilize Zaku Bazookas or a chest-mounted diffusion beam cannon.
Background
Deployed near the end of the One Year War, the Dom Tropen fought primarily along the African front. In U.C. 0083, units stationed at Kimbareid Base participated in the assault on Torrington Base to draw away enemy forces while Anavel Gato seized the Gundam GP02. Years later in U.C. 0096, surviving sand brown units were again fielded by Zeon remnants during another strike against Torrington Base.
Relationships
Pilots such as Gary and Adamsky operated Dom Tropens during the assault on Torrington Base to cover Major Anavel Gato. During the conflict, Gary encountered a captured Zaku F2 fielded by the Earth Federation Forces and expressed deep sorrow at the state of his former comrades' mobile suit before slicing it apart with his heat saber.
Trivia
The name designation "Tropen" translates to "tropical" in German. Alternate renderings in model kit promotion and line delivery led to variations like "Troopen", sometimes misconstrued as referring to troop or cavalry designations. Visual design details of the leg dust filters were directly inspired by the tropical supercharger air intakes used on the historical Luftwaffe Messerschmitt Bf 109 G fighter aircraft.
