GM Quel
The RGM-79Q GM Quel is a mass-produced general-purpose mobile suit featured in Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory and related Gundam media. Produced for the Earth Federation Forces, it was adopted as the initial flagship mass-production unit for the specialized Titans organization. Its primary design intent focuses on riot control, policing operations within space colonies, and hunting down remnant Zeon forces. Evolved from the foundation of the GM Custom, the unit serves as an important technological link leading up to the development of the RX-178 Gundam Mk-II.
Overview
The RGM-79Q GM Quel is a mass-produced general-purpose mobile suit featured in Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory and related Gundam media. Produced for the Earth Federation Forces, it was adopted as the initial flagship mass-production unit for the specialized Titans organization. Its primary design intent focuses on riot control, policing operations within space colonies, and hunting down remnant Zeon forces. Evolved from the foundation of the GM Custom, the unit serves as an important technological link leading up to the development of the RX-178 Gundam Mk-II.
Appearance
Standing 18.0 meters tall with a standard weight of 39.8 metric tons and a fully equipped weight of 56.3 metric tons, the base GM Quel sports a distinct two-tone color scheme consisting of a black torso paired with dark blue as its dominant shade. While its general silhouette closely mirrors the GM Custom, it omits the outward shoulder support thrusters and incorporates specialized anti-personnel sensors in the legs. Alternative color variants exist, such as the red-and-white scheme used by the Confeito and Themis forces, as well as an almost entirely black unit with red accents belonging to the Re-Zeon faction. Early production models utilized forearms from the GM Kai, legs from the GM Custom, and a unique visor mask design.
Personality
As a piloted mass-produced mobile suit, the GM Quel lacks an individual personality or self-awareness. Throughout various conflicts, it has been operated by numerous Earth Federation and Titans pilots, including Alpha A. Bate, Bernard Monsha, Chap Adel, Ford Romfellow, and Ernest McGuire.
Abilities
Optimized for urban and colony engagements, the machine introduces an experimental internal frame structure in its arms that separates armor from the inner skeleton to increase mobility and load capacity. Its fixed armament consists of two head-mounted 60mm vulcan guns and a single beam saber. For handheld weaponry, it can deploy a caseless 90mm GM rifle, standard beam rifles, a long-range sniper beam rifle, and a beam-coated curved shield. Optional gear includes torso-only Chobam armor for ballistic protection and an extended long rifle configuration. Later retrofits also integrated a panoramic monitor and linear seat cockpit system.
Background
Following the Delaz Conflict in late U.C. 0083, the GM Quel was chosen to become the frontline mass-production unit for the newly established Titans military branch. Developed and modified by Anaheim Electronics using the GM Custom as a baseline, engineers simplified the arm joint mechanics to improve reliability while maintaining high maneuverability. Although later phased out of primary production in favor of units like the Hizack and GM II, its exceptionally reliable frame formed the technical foundation for the RX-178 Gundam Mk-II and served as the testbed platform for the Gundam TR-1 [Hazel] series. Modified units continued to serve across various factions throughout the Gryps War.
Relationships
The machine represents a direct derivative of the GM Custom while incorporating basic structural concepts originated from the RX-78NT-1 Alex. The experimental frame testing conducted on its arms contributed directly to the architectural design of the RX-178 Gundam Mk-II. Under the Titans Test Team, the unit served as the base frame for creating the test machines Gundam TR-1 [Hazel] and Early Hazel. Notable assigned pilots include Lieutenant Alpha A. Bate, Lieutenant Bernard Monsha, Sub-Lieutenant Chap Adel, and Captain Wes Murphy.
Trivia
The name 'Quel' derives from the English word 'quell' meaning to suppress, while double-functioning as an acronym for 'Qualified to Use Earthly Law' (or 'QUalified to Enforce the Law'), echoing the political ideology of the Titans organization. Although it originally appeared in only a few brief shots during the finale of Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory, its lore and status expanded significantly over time through model kit releases such as the Master Grade line and extensive variant designs featured in the Advance of Zeta project.
