Buster Gundam
The GAT-X103 Buster Gundam is a mobile suit featured in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED. Developed as the second unit of the Earth Alliance's initial GAT-X series, it was designed specifically for heavy artillery fire support from long ranges. After being hijacked by ZAFT, it became the signature machine of pilot Dearka Elsman. Built to operate in tactical coordination with allied units, the machine excels at medium- to long-range combat through its high-powered, combinable artillery system.
Overview
The GAT-X103 Buster Gundam is a mobile suit featured in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED. Developed as the second unit of the Earth Alliance's initial GAT-X series, it was designed specifically for heavy artillery fire support from long ranges. After being hijacked by ZAFT, it became the signature machine of pilot Dearka Elsman. Built to operate in tactical coordination with allied units, the machine excels at medium- to long-range combat through its high-powered, combinable artillery system.
Appearance
The unit features armor colored in white, green, and orange, paired with a head unit equipped with a V-fin antenna and green dual sensors. Twin heavy cannons are mounted on its backpack and connected via articulated arms to both sides of its waist, while six-tube missile pods are housed within both shoulders.
Abilities
Equipped with Phase Shift Armor, a dedicated sub-generator, and knee auxiliary power supplies, the machine maintains operational activity despite heavy energy demands. Its armaments include a right-waist 350mm Gun-Launcher firing armor-piercing or sticky HESH rounds for area control, and a left-waist 94mm High-Energy Beam Rifle with firepower surpassing warship main guns. Combining the two weapons forms either the Anti-Armor Shotgun for wide-area destruction or the Hyper Impulse Long-Range Sniper Rifle firing a distinct yellow beam. Shoulder-mounted 220mm six-tube missile pods handle incoming threats, but the machine lacks shields and close-quarters weapons, leaving it vulnerable at close range.
Background
Secretly constructed at the Heliopolis colony by the Atlantic Federation and Morgenroete, the suit was stolen during a ZAFT raid and assigned to Dearka Elsman. Operating alongside Yzak Joule's Duel Gundam in pursuing the Archangel, it suffered critical power system damage during an engagement with a Skyglassper and was captured. When the Archangel defected to Orb, the unit integrated into the Three Ships Alliance, becoming the sole initial GAT-X mobile suit to serve across three distinct factions. In the Second Battle of Jachin Due, it suffered heavy damage from the Providence Gundam's DRAGOON system; however, its combined sniper rifle was retrieved by the Duel Gundam to destroy the Raider Gundam.
Relationships
The mobile suit was primarily piloted by Dearka Elsman. It shared a combat partnership with Yzak Joule and his GAT-X102 Duel Gundam, which provided frontline coverage while the Buster delivered rear artillery fire, even borrowing the Buster's cannon in final combat. It forms the original GAT-X series alongside the GAT-X105 Strike Gundam, GAT-X207 Blitz Gundam, and GAT-X303 Aegis Gundam. A rebuilt unit was later piloted by Shams Coza under Phantom Pain, and its design served as the foundation for variant machines including the GAT-X103AP Verde Buster Gundam and ZGMF-103HD Lightning Buster Gundam.
Trivia
While the name "Buster" signifies a destroyer in English, its initial conceptual designation was assigned the kanji for "Storm" (暴風). The machine also embodies the recurring Gundam franchise tradition where the "Unit 2" mobile suit is stolen by opposing forces. Additionally, while beam weaponry in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED is typically depicted with red or green energy trails, the Buster Gundam's combined long-range sniper rifle fires a distinct yellow beam.
