Overview

The YMS-15 Gyan is a prototype mobile suit belonging to the Principality of Zeon from Mobile Suit Gundam. Manufactured by the Zimmad Corporation, it was created to compete against the MS-14 Gelgoog for selection as Zeon's next primary mass-production machine. Designed with a strict focus on close-quarters combat, the suit is famously piloted by Colonel M'Quve. Defined by its medieval knight aesthetic and highly specialized weapon loadout, the Gyan remains a memorable and prominent mecha across the franchise.

Appearance

The Gyan features an armored silhouette and head unit designed in the likeness of a European medieval knight. Its facial visor incorporates a cross-shaped slit housing a single red mono-eye camera. Painted primarily in grey, the suit carries a slender rapier-like prototype beam saber alongside a large circular shield pierced with numerous weapon ports.

Personality

As a combat machine, the Gyan reflects an elegant and duel-centric combat style. Rather than relying on heavy artillery fire, its operational design requires closing the distance for precise one-on-one fencing engagements, utilizing subtle traps and harassment to dictate the pace of battle against single opponents.

Abilities

Equipped with a fluid pulse accelerator housed in its hip joints, the Gyan compresses excess energy into a hypersonic state to fuel powerful, swift melee maneuvers. Its main offense lies in a high-output prototype beam saber engineered for sharp thrusting attacks. Its circular shield doubles as an offensive launcher containing needle missiles and space hide bombs for control and disruption. However, the frame lacks the capability to wield heavy long-range firearms such as beam rifles.

Background

Developed near the end of the One Year War during Zeon's next-generation main mobile suit evaluation, the Gyan lost the mass-production contest to the Gelgoog due to its low versatile firepower and a shortage of skilled pilots late in the war. A prototype was delivered to Colonel M'Quve, who piloted it in a duel against Amuro Ray's RX-78-2 Gundam inside the Texas Colony before being destroyed. Despite failing to reach standard mass production, its potent close-quarters technology directly influenced later designs like the Galbaldy series.

Relationships

Colonel M'Quve served as the suit's primary pilot, taking immense pride in operating it as his personal craft under the faction of Kycilia Zabi. On the battlefield, its defining conflict was a fierce duel against Amuro Ray's RX-78-2 Gundam. In spin-off media such as Gundam Build Fighters, builder Susumu Sazaki displays an earnest devotion to the unit, building customized Gunpla variants based on the Gyan.

Trivia

In the strategy video game series Gihren's Ambition, players controlling Zeon can choose an alternate path where the Gyan beats the Gelgoog to become the official mass-produced main suit. The machine has also spawned various alternate models across expanded lore and games, including the Gyan Cannon, Gyan Eos, and Gyan Marine.
