Hathaway Noa

Overview

Hathaway Noa is the central protagonist of Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway, having previously appeared in Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam and Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack. He is the eldest son of legendary Earth Federation officer Bright Noa and Mirai Yashima. After experiencing the devastating conflicts of his youth during the Second Neo Zeon War, he poses as a candidate plant inspector on Earth while secretly serving as the commander of the anti-Federation dissident group Mafty Navue Erin to combat systemic government corruption.

Appearance

Depicted across childhood at age seven, adolescence at thirteen, and adulthood at twenty-five, Hathaway Noa features short black or dark brown hair matched with dark brown or black eyes. As a young adult, he presents a refined appearance, dressed in civilian suits, a collared white shirt with dark trousers and rolled sleeves, or a specialized pilot suit when operating mobile suits.

Personality

To outward observers, Hathaway presents himself as a polite, articulate, and well-educated young man who easily earns the trust of others. Beneath this polished exterior, however, he is deeply scarred by past trauma. Driven by intense moral outrage against the Earth Federation's corruption and environmental degradation, he firmly commits to his revolutionary cause while struggling internally with guilt, self-doubt, and profound personal isolation.

Abilities

Hathaway possesses exceptional physical capabilities, demonstrating effective hand-to-hand combat skills by quickly subduing armed hijackers aboard a commercial flight. As a Newtype, he exhibits heightened perceptive sensitivity, allowing him to sense the emotions and presence of others across space. He is also a remarkably skilled mobile suit pilot, successfully defeating enemy units during his first combat deployment in an RGM-89 Jegan and later commanding the advanced RX-105 Xi Gundam.

Background

Born around U.C. 0080, Hathaway Noa experienced armed conflict during childhood in Hong Kong before being caught in the Second Neo Zeon War at age thirteen. The tragic death of Quess Paraya during that crisis deeply scarred his emotional outlook. Following a brief period of military service, he pursued botanical studies as a candidate inspector on Earth. Appalled by the Federation government's oppressive policies, he collaborated with former military figures to establish the resistance movement Mafty, serving as its primary leader.

Relationships

Hathaway is the son of Earth Federation officer Bright Noa and Mirai Yashima, and the older brother of Cheimin Noa. His strong adolescent affection for Quess Paraya ended in tragedy, leaving a permanent emotional impact. He holds great respect for Amuro Ray and Char Aznable, drawing inspiration from their principles. On Earth, he forms a romantic bond with Keria Dace while sharing a complex attraction with Gigi Andalusia, and faces off against Kenneth Sleg and Lane Aim.

Trivia

His revolutionary alias Mafty Navue Erin combines terms from Sudanic, Arabic, and Old Irish to mean the true and legitimate king of prophets. The Murrumbidgee River featured during his campaign is historically recognized as an ever-flowing waterway. Across various animated, novel, and video game adaptations, Hathaway's portrayal varies in voice acting between his youth and adulthood, as well as in specific plot details and mobile suit operational settings.
