Overview

The GAT-X131 Calamity Gundam is a heavy artillery Mobile Suit featured in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED. Developed by the Earth Alliance under the second-generation GAT-X series, it traces its design lineage back to the GAT-X103 Buster Gundam. Piloted by the Boosted Man Orga Sabnak, the machine serves as a dedicated long-range bombardment unit capable of delivering devastating firepower from behind the frontline.

Appearance

The machine features a V-fin antenna mounted on its head. Its distinctive armaments include two large dual beam cannons attached to its backpack, a prominent chest-mounted energy cannon, a portable heavy bazooka, and a shield integrated with a dual-barreled cannon that features a pointed blade at its tip. Lacking flight capabilities within the atmosphere, it relies on thrusters for hover movement or travels by riding on the back of its teammate, the Raider Gundam.

Personality

Its pilot, Orga Sabnak, possesses a relatively calm tactical demeanor compared to his fellow Boosted Men, yet he exhibits a highly aggressive personality in combat, often expressing excitement at the wealth of targets available. Initially prone to recklessly spamming heavy beam weaponry to the point of rapidly draining his suit's battery, he matures over time to exercise self-restraint and coordinate effectively with his squadmates.

Abilities

The suit specializes in long-range artillery with a heavy arsenal. Its primary long-range weaponry consists of the backpack-mounted 125mm dual high-energy long-range beam cannon 'Schlag' and the chest-integrated 580mm multi-phase energy cannon 'Scylla'. For physical firepower, it carries the 337mm plasma-sabot bazooka 'Todesblock'. For self-defense and close engagement, it utilizes the 115mm dual ram cannon shield 'Kaefer Zwei', equipped with a reinforced anti-beam coating and a pointed tip that acts as a piercing ram.

Background

Developed as part of the second-generation GAT-X series under the National Defense Contractors, the unit was tailored specifically for Bio-CPUs using data from the Buster Gundam. It made its combat debut during the Orb Liberation Operation. Later transferred to space operations under the Dominion crew, it participated in major battles around the L4 colony cluster, Boaz, and Jachin Due. In its final engagement, it was sliced in half from behind by the joint assault of the METEOR-equipped Freedom Gundam and Justice Gundam.

Relationships

The suit is assigned to Orga Sabnak, a Boosted Man serving the Earth Alliance. It routinely operates alongside its sister units, the Raider Gundam (piloted by Clotho Buer) and the Forbidden Gundam (piloted by Shani Andras). Due to its lack of flight capability, it frequently relies on the Raider Gundam for aerial transport. Under the operational command of Muruta Azrael aboard the Dominion, it engages in repeated combat against Kira Yamato's Freedom Gundam and Athrun Zala's Justice Gundam.

Trivia

During a launch scene in the animated series, the Mobile Suit was notably called out by its model number alone, '131', a rare occurrence in the franchise. Several of its weapon designations are derived from German words, such as 'Schlag' (strike), 'Todesblock' (execution block), and 'Kaefer Zwei' (beetle two). In addition to receiving numerous model kits and action figures, the Calamity Gundam appears across various gaming franchises, including the SD Gundam G Generation and Gundam VS. series.
