Char Aznable

Overview

Char Aznable is a pivotal figure in the Universal Century timeline of the Mobile Suit Gundam franchise. Born Casval Rem Deikun, the son of the founder of the Republic of Zeon, he operates under various aliases as a renowned mobile suit ace and political leader. Throughout his career, he serves as an officer in the Principality of Zeon forces, a key figure in the anti-Earth Federation organization AEUG, and eventually the Supreme Leader of Neo Zeon. As the perpetual rival of Amuro Ray, his actions deeply shape the geopolitical conflict of his era.

Appearance

Char is a man with short blonde hair and blue eyes. He frequently keeps his face or eyes concealed using a signature full-face mask, a helmet, or dark sunglasses depending on his operative identity. In his service attire, he wears military uniforms featuring jackets with epaulettes and gloves. He strongly favors red as his personal color, famously customizing his assigned mobile suits and gear in distinct crimson shades.

Personality

Char is highly proud, intensely competitive, and exceptionally confident, possessing a sharp pragmatic intelligence that allows him to cast aside personal ties for his overriding goals. While skilled at political rhetoric and social maneuvering, he harbors deep internal vulnerability and a lingering desire for unconditional emotional acceptance. This emotional void occasionally leads him from charismatic leadership to pragmatic callousness and radical ideological despair.

Abilities

Char possesses Newtype spatial awareness and intuition, paired with elite mobile suit piloting capabilities that extract peak efficiency from his custom machines. Beyond his tactical instincts in battle, he is an accomplished military strategist, an adept operative in hand-to-hand combat and covert infiltration, and a skilled politician capable of swaying public morale through strategic speeches.

Background

Born in U.C. 0059 as Casval Rem Deikun, he fled to Earth under the alias Edward Mass after his father's demise to escape persecution by the Zabi family. He later assumed the identity of Char Aznable, joining the Zeon military and earning terror as 'The Red Comet' during the One Year War while secretly orchestrating his revenge. Following a period of covert operations as Quattro Bajeena in the AEUG during the Gryps Conflict, he eventually resurfaced as the Supreme Leader of Neo Zeon, attempting to force humanity's migration to space by dropping the Axis asteroid onto Earth.

Relationships

His biological younger sister is Sayla Mass (Artesia Som Deikun). During the One Year War, he feigned friendship with Garma Zabi while covertly orchestrating his downfall. The death of Lalah Sune, a young Newtype with whom he shared an intense psychic bond, left a permanent scar on his psyche. Amuro Ray serves as his eternal rival and nemesis, bound by mutual recognition and constant conflict. He acted as a mentor to Kamille Bidan during his time in the AEUG, while later utilizing Quess Paraya and Nanai Miguel as tools for his command in Neo Zeon.

Trivia

The name Char Aznable was derived from the French chanson singer Charles Aznavour. His famous association with operating custom red machines at three times the standard speed, along with his distinct dramatic phrasing in dialogue, remains one of the most widely referenced elements across the Gundam franchise.
