Overview
Shaddiq Zenelli is a prominent character in Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury. He is a third-year piloting student at the Asticassia Higher Education Corporation, serving as the head of Grassley House and a leading member of the Dueling Committee. As the adopted son of Sarius Zenelli, CEO of Grassley Defense Systems, he is regarded as a promising future corporate executive. He also pilots the mobile suit Michaelis.
Appearance
Shaddiq is a handsome young man with dark skin, green eyes, and long blonde hair that he sometimes ties into a ponytail, with bangs hanging between his eyes. On campus, he wears his Asticassia school uniform casually unbuttoned and relaxed. However, for official business and corporate meetings, he binds his hair neatly and dresses impeccably. His outfit includes shoulder boards and subtle jewelry accessories.
Personality
On the surface, Shaddiq projects a charming, casual, and flirtatious persona, often surrounding himself with women. Behind this smooth exterior lies a sharp, pragmatic, and ruthless political mind. He keeps others at arm's length, rarely exposing his true feelings, which makes him difficult to trust. While he possesses a broad strategic vision, his tendency to prioritize long-term calculations over genuine personal connection can lead to cold and manipulative choices.
Abilities
Shaddiq is an exceptionally skilled mobile suit pilot, undefeated in team duels when leading his squad of Grassley female pilots. As an executive, he has produced remarkable business results, including heading Grassley R&D. Beyond his combat capability, he possesses sharp analytical skills, persuasive negotiation abilities, and a talent for complex clandestine operations and strategic maneuvering.
Background
Born an orphan of mixed Earthian and Spacian heritage, Shaddiq was raised in a Grassley facility before his talents caught the eye of Sarius Zenelli, who adopted him as his son and heir. At the academy, while performing his student duties, he secretly funds allies and orchestrates a high-stakes plot involving Earth-based armed groups to dismantle the Benerit Group and balance power between Earth and space.
Relationships
He maintains a complex, business-like relationship with his adoptive father, Sarius Zenelli. He shares a history with his childhood friend Miorine Rembran, though his calculating nature drives an emotional wedge between them. He has a complicated, tense rivalry with Guel Jeturk and keeps close tabs on Elan Ceres. Additionally, he surrounds himself with a loyal inner circle of female Grassley pilots and maintains ties with Nika Nanaura.
Trivia
Fans often compare his charismatic leadership of an all-female squad and his calculating nature to Paptimus Scirocco from Mobile Suit Z Gundam. In the ending credits of the anime's very first episode, his name was accidentally misspelled in the Japanese text.
